I think this is the right place for this post……

How’do!! Right, well, for those who’ve read my posts before, I’ll apologise in advance, as this one will (hopefully) be shorter than normal….. ha ha

So - in a couple of weeks I’m heading for my first visit to a new lease. A few hours drive from home and therefore in two minds as to an overnight stay. To be fair, I’m not massively expecting to have a first successful visit & more than happy to spend the weekend learning about the ground and just generally taking it all in. However, that said, if a suitable Buck presents an opportunity - I’ll take it. This then brings me to my question - if I’m successful on the Saturday I’d expect to gralloch etc as normal and then store the carcass in my pick up in a large plasterer’s bath where I’ll have a collection of bottles of frozen water and some of the those freezer style gel packs. That normally sorts the job until I get home - however - what would the view be on leaving that overnight whilst I sleep and then return home the next morning (fairly sharp under those circumstances). Just so that all makes sense, I’d be booking a room in a little, local hotel, and whilst not a fortune, would seem a shame to waste the fee and just clear off home. Of course, the plan being if I’m not successful on the Saturday, I’ve got the Sunday for another crack!! For the avoidance of doubt, there’s no larder facilities on the ground or nearby nor a game dealer within a reasonable travel distance. The carcass would be going back home with me for my own consumption.

As ever, thanks in advance!!

So why not either, buy an enclosed cool box like an igloo thus massively extending your “cool time” than the open bath.

Or don’t book a room, take the tent and live the outdoor dream.

I had considered both of those options - so, would you suggest the leaving it over night isn’t a good idea? (Probably complicated by my overfly flowery use of words) That’s ultimately my question! Should I, or shouldn’t I?

Personally it depends too much on the overnight temps really. In winter I’d have no worries, but the overnight temps at the moment would melt ice in an open bath pretty fast.

Plus look on the bright side, the money you save on hotel rooms will soon pay for the igloo, and you’ll be at your stalking ground without driving.

I'd go for it. In a couple of weeks, overnight temperatures won't be higher than 10-12 degrees. The ice packs in bath would probably barely have completely melted in that time, and I doubt the carcass would spoil.

I stalk some ground a few hours from home and when the weather is warm I tend to skin and cut into primals then bag up and put into a cool box with the usual ice packs ect if you’ve got digs take the vac packer and butcher and vac pack saves you loads of time when your home as you can just put it straight in freezer

Get a tent, or simply a bivvy bag. That way, if you shoot something on the Saturday evening you can beetle off home, and if not you can stay over. That's what I do, anyway. It's nice to be able to bed down on the ground where you'll be stalking. Gets you really tuned in.
I had thought that through too - I just have a slight aversion to sleeping in a bivvy that Im no longer getting paid to sleep in 😂😂

Ha ha... get woken up at silly o’clock in the morning with your back killing you and bitten half to death by god only knows what..... who are you kidding 😂😂😂

Camp out overnight on the ground, it's great to feel so in touch with the environment you are hunting in, better than some hotel room any day, borrow a carp fishing bedchair to sleep on and you'll get a decent night's sleep. Take plenty of frozen 4 pint ice blocks in a cooler.

What about finding out if there is a butcher in the location, uses Google, or better if you know anyone in the place you are visiting, ask if you can use their facility if needed, and offer a tender loin....or two. That way you may be able to secure a permanent base for storing your carcasses. In any event best of luck

Not at all. I have a small canvas camp bed that keeps me a few inches off the ground, a milsurp sleeping bag and a milsurp bivvy bag. Snug as a bug in a rug with that lot. Biggest risk I suppose is being jabbed in the ribs by an irate fallow buck who's mistaken my resonant snoring for the grunting of a fiesty rival!

Aren't there any other stalkers on the lease that can let you use their chiller overnight?
As far as I’m aware - there’s nothing local. So I’m assuming the rest of the lads must just do a single outing. To be fair, the question was mainly on the basis that it’s my first proper visit (I’ve driven the ground with the guy who runs the syndicate) so was planning to spend the whole weekend and concentrate on just getting a feel for the place. Therefore it was more a theoretical question - ie - if push came to shove, would a carcass be ok overnight.

But, as ever, I do appreciate all of the answers!! 😎
