Really lads the ammunition cost debate is a fruitless exercise, stalkers spend multiple £1000’s on a rifle, £300 sticks, £350 knives and then bitch and winge about the cost of bullets 🙈😂😂

When in reality without the bullets all you have is a fuking expensive steel tube with a kaleidoscope on the top!

If you can not afford to feed your habit sell up and pack it in and quit winging about it!

I'm packing in when it gets to £20 a pop. Similar to me packing in smoking at £2 a pack, beer drinking at 50p a pint, driving at £1 a gallon, shooting Pheasants at £20 a bird. And breeding my own Spaniels when they wanted 50 quid a pup docked and all paperwork from the professionals.🤓🤓

The going rate for head contracts is £170 a deer, but often by the time it gets down to those on the ground it’s substantially less than that.

As usual, your figures are off.

And given that pretty much all commercial forestry is going lead free to meet certification requirements he won’t be able to continue using lead ammo.

Wrong again. The UK's leading private forestry management company is still using lead.

And no employer will risk the loss of major income for the sake of saving a few quid on ammo.

Venison isn't a 'major income' by a long shot. When you add up the running costs of a larder and means to cull the deer (stalker/ranger/contractor) + expenses, of which ammo is a crucial one, you are always going to be looking at a net loss.

Only way to justify this is by claiming these efforts reduce damage/need for re-plating (beating up), increase crop yields etc.

Truth be told, strategically choosing where and what to plant saves a lot more than culling deer ever will. Not to mention that deer are not the only thing that damage trees...

Prove your highlighted statement...

Quit your winging!

You run on too much about something you very clearly know very little about, carcasses cover ammunition costs even at £10 a pop.

You cant buy the meat off a munty for £10 so really the ammunition cost debate is null and void!

Personally for me range time is a waste of time, 3 shots to zero and 17 dead deer per 20.

Once you know how to shoot a rifle it’s pretty much point and squirt to 200m with 100-140gn projectile regardless of calibre

I have been paying £1.50 plus a pop since 2004
If you are a member of a target club it’s an issue

Unfortunately thats a possibility, but it will be what it will be!

There is bugger all we can do about it, the ammunition companies are not going to give 2 hoots if your hunting or target shooting, you want the bullets you will have to pay the price.

For me it depends on the cartridge. For a big dangerous game rifle, ten quid isn't so bad. I don't fire many. Deer ammunition, well I guess £60 or so per box isn't the end of the world. I get a deer out of it after all.

I home load the big rounds to save money but if I couldn't, that's where I'd be. The bullets I use in my deer rifles cost about a quid, and I'm not that bothered really.

Unless you bought the components a long time ago and in bulk, this isn't possible anymore.
Yep. Any copper is over £1 for the bullet alone now and primers 10-20p.

No one is loading copper deer ammunition with components they went out and bought today for less than £1.50-1.80 per round.

I think I've got enough big stuff to see me out. Got some of that crap copper stuff and plenty of good lead ammo. Our regular taker of deer is still happy with lead shot animals as are family, friends and others. Got plenty of bullets, primers and powder for the Hornet so no problems or increased cost.

Hookers and coke is cheaper!

With the cost of everything rising we should all just sit at home and watch Emmerdale, depression street etc.
