Mini camper, sleeping in your vehicle

Thanks all, I’m getting on , sleeping in car not for me anymore , I use to sleep on a ‘ Basha ‘ many years ago, like a stretcher raised off ground between a couple of tree trunks, so maybe I will be starting a project, finding a vehicle with good ground clearance and and kitting it out into a mini camper, stop anywhere in the wood, something dry n warm to Kip in👍🏻
Stop playing the OAP and grow a set 😉😉🤣
You want to stalk deer .
You got to take the rough with the smooth

From somebody who has two pickups a campervan and two touring caravans.
Oh and Angel eyes don't forget those two gearboxes you keep reminding me of 😉

Whenever I sleep in the car I make sure and take my rifle apart and bury the pieces separately ‘for security’ and to make things harder and less productive for myself - can’t be hard to find someone who claims it’s a legal requirement.

Bivvy bag on a hillside in the heather is pretty enjoyable, with rifle beside me and sika sack for a pillow.

In summer it's in the car to escape flies/midges which is really uncomfy - I've progressed to a fishing cabin now which is much more comfy, and I've bought a tent too.

For more years than I want to remember I slept in the back of an old escort van when away fishing (every weekend/holiday.
When the van went I swapped to a canvas bed roll (swag) always warm and dry with a decent sleeping bag.
These days too old and stiff to live like that, and my days of sleeping on the floor are long gone.
I suppose one day I should actually sell my swags off to someone who will use them, just taking up room I can't afford.

Neil.

Same ere…but these times round I don’t have the platoon stripey coming round nicking half my curry from me. 😎
Never sh1t on your guys, they may save your life one day. Was a good tip from an old Sgt Major wearing WW2 medal ribbons. I valued my life. ;)

Hmmm, my old stripey wasn’t one for democracy. Him and his ‘racing spoon’….‘I’m jus checking yer scoffs ok lads’ he used to say. The old bugger 🪖🇬🇧

Problems may arise if you fancy a few beers in the evening in your camper van, if plod were to happen by then you could be done for being drunk in charge of a vehicle. Hefty fine, driving licence gone, hefty insurance premium……..FAC/SGC only a distant memory.

If you want an early start maybe to get up high in forestry at first light. I've used a hammock and a good sleeping bag under a waterproof tarp. Gets you off the cold ground, tarp just above you.
Small stove for early brew.

Not if you're parked on private property, surely? Otherwise plod would be doing a roaring trade visiting every campsite up and down the land.

Not on private property, but parking areas for camper vans would be owned by the local authority.
In my teens I slept in my car after beach parties without the slightest thought of the implications, until someone pointed it out to me.

I guess most people staying on their stalking ground wouldn't be using local authority campsites.

I've slept on the back seat on my disco 1 a good few times. The trick is to add some padding to bring up the level of the seat bases to take the bum dips out of them. Otherwise you will have a very uncomfortabel night. I assume most cars are the same.
Leave the windows open a crack to get some airflow and let the moisture out.
Hanging up some coats etc help to be a bit more discrete. Had to do that kipping in a hospital car park, when a relative was taken ill. Security saw nothing.

If you are sleeping in a tent, a good ground mat is your friend. The ground will suck the heat from you.
Air beds are not great, as the air circulates inside. A closed cell foam mat is better. The self inflating ones are good to. I also use a bit of the silver foil backed bubble wrap. Sold at B&Q for insulating behind radiators.
A cot bed tend to be cold, as the air circulates underneath. And your weight against the bed tends to flatten your sleeping bag. So you get cold hips etc. Doubling up a single matress as extra insulation works well, if laid on the cot as insulation under you.

A good sleeping bag is nice. But if you are not using often, is expensive. A single duvet is enough. Possibly add an army wool blanket. I have some new stock Swiss army ones, for £20 each off ebay, really nice.
Have a wooly hat. And I always put a fresh/dry set of socks on before getting into the bag. Warm feet will make for a comfy night. Try it, you'll be impressed.
If you want a cheap winter bag, see if you can find an ex-army arctic bag. Been out in sub zero temps in those and end up having to sleep half out of it.

If you want a car camping tent recommendation... Khyam quick pitch tents. Shame that they don't do the Highlander anymore. The iglo looks similar. They are double skinned, so you don't get condensation on the inside. Though they seem to have all gone up in price a lot since I brought.
