Mini camper, sleeping in your vehicle

Slept in the back of my Subaru Outback station wagon a few times with rear seats folded down allows an under 6 footer to stretch out enough. In Montana we have hundreds of thousands of Forest Service and BLM acres with campgrounds, roads through the mountains - very spoiled for places to park, sleep and hunt or fish out of.

As others have mentioned, gotta have an air mattress. So much warmer, comfy and better sleep. I crack the windows and spray bug juice around the window openings to keep the mosquitoes at bay.

Great thread, like hearing how you do it in the UK!

I heard a story about someone who had kitted out his Ford Transit van as a camper with stove, fridge etc. He got pulled over by the DVLA/VOSA and told he was not paying enough road fund license. Is this possible?

I have slept many times in my van. I have insulated it well and only being 5' 6" I am able to stretch out on a foam mattress in a quality sleeping-bag, comfortably. The dog sleeps at the other side. Cooking wise, I use a simple 'CampingGaz' stove to heat-up pre-cooked meals and have brews. I keep things simple and don't over clutter with unnecessary 'stuff'. Not for everyone I understand, but a 65, still not lost my enthusiasm and 'boyish' sense of 'adventure' ! Nothing beats being out under the stars in the African bush tho' !

Done camper van , tent , vehicle , low and high grade hotels , truck, falling to bits old static caravans, sofas , spare bedrooms
I haven't done Boat for stalking but i have for fishing thats about it
all have their merits and downsides
truck is just fine for one night on my own

Adders are venomous.
Yes they are but not life threatening, give you a head ache if you are normally fit, we used to catch them for London zoo, and the reptilary at holiday hill.
Not quite your cotton mouth, copperheads and rattle snakes we had in Illinois and we slept in tents, even in Australia swag bags are more popular

I did a ski season in Val d-Isere in the back of my old Hi-Lux with an Ifor Willimas top, North Face 4 season bag and a blow up mattress.
I was 24 then, done my days roughing it.

Very true, but you said there were none.

Serious for your dog if it is bitten by a adder.

George Morpeth, a nicer man it'd be hard to meet, had a converted British Army four tonner wireless truck as his "camper van" when his regiment the 9/12 Lancers were deployed on exercise.

Ten or twelve years ago part of a syndicate in Scotland, decided to fit out my Land Rover 90 so I could kip in it with a little comfort. Army surplus folding bed adapted two legs to fit over the wheel arch with the passenger seat laid flat.Army surplus sleeping bag, bulky but did the job. Old sheep skin rug for my dog to sleep on. Hot water bottle, game changer. Lantern to have a read. All planned meals part cooked and in a chiller box. I've got to say these were some of the most enjoyable outings I did stalking. The one thing I found that was essential I needed to park on flat ground, so i always park on a premier inn hotel paid £ 22 for room with breakfast and b00l0cks to roughing it. This is all true except the last sentence.

You will be much more comfortable in a good small tent - small so your own heat keeps it warm. Or better go for a small bell canvas type tent and install a wood burner.

Get a really good sleeping bag and also a good thick blow up sleeping pad. A cot is also good. You loose most of your heat to the ground.

Beauty of a tent is that on stalking trips you inevitably want to use the car, so not having to set up / dismantle your kit all the time is a blessing.

You can get a decent 3 to 4 season tent for a bit under £300.

Alpkit do good affordable kit. I have had one of their 4 Season bags for 15 years. Its wonderful. In summer I just use it opened up as a duvet. I have slept out in winter inside a bivvy bag and slept well.

Roof tents are wonderful - in Africa. Not sure I would want to sleep in one in a Scottish wet foul weather and no shelter.

Cars are metal boxes. Have pretty much zero insulation so are cold in winter - any heat just flows out. A tent with a fly sheet and inner is well insulated and can get pretty warm from just the occupents body heat.

Spot on.

I have a canvas swag tent that can fit on the back to the hilux but I prefer to put it on the earth. Comes with memory foam mattress already inside roll it out put three poles in and off you go. Slept on -6c in it with a three season bag was much warmer than a fabric tent.

That aside jetboil, hot water bottle, good sleeping bag and quality toilet roll. 😂
