I have changed caliber from a 270 win to a 6.5, I was using a hausken 184 size 270-3006, but now I have changed do I really need to go and change the moderator. Will there be any noticeable difference.would I be right in thinking that I would have to buy a 30 cal anyway which I all ready have. My Firearms department have included it in my variation to change the sound mod but the threads are the same it seems a bit daft to spend £350 ish to buy a new one if this will do. Any help would be great. Thanks

Why? Just keep the open slot for another moderator you may want to use it in the future, or you may want to buy something else in which case you could do a 1-4-1.

I run a 30cal on my 243, and very well it works. (It's down on the FAC as a .243)
Have just fitted a 30cal ASE ultra on a friends 270. (Again on his FAC as .270).
I use 22mods on my .17's
The volume of the mod seems to have the biggest effect on the effectivness of most mods.
Clearance far less so. As the bullet spends so little time between the baffles and the gas pressure there for (proportionally) a very long time.

There is a fair bit out there saying that radial clearance is important wrt performance but my experience same as those above - I get very similar sound & recoil reduction shooting 7mmRM and 30.06 through a .30 FD fw196.
F&D told me a 7mm one will work even better on the 7mmRM but yet to test the theory...

Get a friend (Not best) to fire a round through the new set up while you stand 50 yds away and “test“ the sound reduction

Use existing mod, and keep the open slot. You might want to buy another rifle in a year or two, and it's a free 141 to swap a mod slot for a rifle slot

Question was "should I use an oversize mod or get one made for my calibre" and the tests show if you want it to perform as best as possible then get one rated for the calibre. Replacing an oversize mod could reduce the loudness by a half...
