4x4 tyres???

Having recently replaced my trusty hilux with a NP300 navara I’m needing to kit her out with a new set of tyres as the more road focused ones at current just ain’t doing the job. My first thought was replacing them with the normal BF Goodrich but they aren’t the best in the wet, make a fair bit of road noise, have dramatically increased in price and weigh an absolute ton which of course eats away at the all to important MPG.
My old D40 had a set of Yokohama tyres on it that ticked most of the boxes but I can’t seem to remember what model of tyre or recognise the tread pattern from memory.
So the question is does anyone have any suggestions that may suit my needs?

Kumho MT51 are a good all terrain tyre too, if you can get them to fit your Navara. I’d be buying them next if they fit on a hilux. I had some on a D40 Navara until its chassis snapped.

Falken Wildpeak AT…. You lose 1mpg ( my Touareg) or 2 mpg ( my old xc90 RIP) compared to road tyres…… very competent off road, better wet grip than the Goodrich and cheaper….

Grabber AT3s - quiet and good manners on the road in the wet.

As good as any AT in the mud.
I recently needed a new Grabber At3 after getting a tyre condemned for a puncture (nail right through the shoulder of the tyre...); I couldn't find any in my size anywhere, seems UK stock is v low (mine was 255/55/19). Just a heads up.

Luckily when I had my AT3s fitted I did the spare as well, so that got fitted to have 4 matching treads, and I got a Yokohama to get slung on the spare.

Thanks to everyone for their inputs. It would seem that the navara tyre size 255/60/18 is a little unusual so may go to 265/60/18 to widen my options.

Ive never used off road tyres on my pick up. Who'd be stupid enough to try and drive across a field at this time of year:lol:
If I think theres a chance i might get stuck then I get the quad or tractor. It makes me more careful not to get stuck.

I really like the Toyo open countries on my defender but considering I used to run insa turbo special tracks and fedima sciroccos on my last daily drive, these new ones seem really civilised lol. Sounds like you need a mild AT tyre though if you want to keep the fuel consumption down

Yokohama geolander for me too, my old man has been running them a few years now on his disco. Cracking tyres. Snow, ice, water, mud. Does the lot - usual caveat of if it's thick gloopy mud it will fill the tread blocks.
I've put some on my Freelander and genuinely no complaints. Mrs has some on hers and had no issues down to -12 degrees that we saw here with plenty of ice

My weapon of choice too! Off-road weekly on mostly grasslands and slippy chalk and I’m very impressed with them - so much that I’m on a second set of 2 of them after a series of unrepairable (too close to side-wall) punctures. Was very happy with the performance of General Grabber AT3 off-road and especially on snow but I lost 4 over 18 months due to sidewall damage - they were just not robust enough. I travel over an hour each way to my stalking grounds and the Wildpeaks are excellent on road at high motorway speeds and bombproof off-road when I get there. Very happy :thumb:

Yep, good tyres. The Falken Wildpeak and the Toyo Open Country AT Plus are two really good affordable tyres that are decent on road and surprisingly good offroad. I would not take them proper mud bashing but my mate especially pushes his Toyo's to ridiculous limits in his first edition Grand Vitara. That thing goes anywhere and he rarely puts it in to 4wd let alone low range. It might be to do with the lighter nature of the little Suzuki but those tyres punch well above their weight.
