I learnt that you can hunt in the UK with a catapult/slingshot. Can you hunt with a bow and arrow then?

Makes me laugh when so called stalkers say “ there will be deer running around with arrows sticking out of them “ arrows generally pass straight through, reading most of the replies about bullet impact, pass through rounds , head shooting, there’s probably as many running around with bullet holes.
As to camo clad bow hunters sneaking around in the bushes, how and when on private land ? Unless poaching

The current regulations and restrictions date back to the 60’s and 70’s, a very different time and place.
Bows were simple recurves and longbows without sights and there were far fewer legal impediments to acquiring a firearm.
At that time bow hunting was very much a minority niche interest, even in the USA, so it was treated as such and ignored.
The attitude was very much “ if you want to hunt deer, go get a rifle”. It still is.
I won’t campaign for you because I don’t want to share the forests with cammo clad archers creeping around in the bushes while I’m under pressure to get numbers on the ground and will have to take up the slack.
Selfish maybe, but from what I‘ve read firearms users and bow hunters sharing the same ground makes a very poor mix and personally I would not give you a separate dedicated bow season or hunting territory.
There may be some application for bows in suburban areas in some circumstances, but even in the USA suburban deer are being culled under licence using silenced firearms at night.
Best of luck with your campaign, but you get a 👎 from me.
Actually it was deerstalking guys who pushed for it to end . Bow hunting is allowed in more nations than not but most those nations require an international bowhunting competence qual and there is one ( unlike with stalking with a rifle ) . Like it or dont it will happen the prevalence of urban deer and ground less suited to the rifle
The reason why we outlawed it was basically deer stalkers pushing the issue about it being in humane and there not being that many deer anyhow but really i feel it was fear of poaching , well that didnt work out too good did it now ? more deer are poached than anything else from what i see ( how times have changed there are deer in major urban towns and even the big cities now )

international bow hunting certified and then get on with it if you have the legal rights to do so on that land . imo.
Maybe have a ticket system on FC managed ground even .

I use to go stump shooting regularly, it was fun. Shooting at leaves and stuff.
Occasionally a rabbit would suddenly appear as I released, it was a close run thing several times!
I use to also be in a field archery club. That is fun.
3D target course full size in woodland. A good day out.

Modern compound bows and crossbows are amazingly accurate.
I certainly would not feel handicapped at all.
For more info on bow hunting ability YouTube tim Wells or Clay Smith.

(Quote)Hunting deer with a bow of any description in the UK is illegal. In fact, it has been illegal to hunt deer with a crossbow, compound bow or any bow whatsoever, whether in the wild or within private deer collections or park environment, since 1965. In the most up-to-date Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 its legal status remained unchanged.
(Quote) Hunting deer with a bow of any description in the UK is illegal and can lead to a fine of up to £5,000 and/or six months in prison.

In a nutshell William its a No and thats from the boss 🏹

I never understood the whole poaching dilemma there is nothing stopping you from going online and buying a compound right at this very moment, Arrows shafts come in camo colours and a little roe Isn't going to run too far after being shot In the lungs by a 80lbs draw, 400gr arrow setup
.
If you wanted to take the gamble and use mechanical blades (they deploy the blades as there fired from the bows, and are sometimes faulty hence why individuals used fixed blades) they are absolutely lethal and will mince the arteries through the animal causing blood lose greater than a bullet and a death way quicker within about 3-4 seconds of being shot and running the animal is death running practically brain dead, however instincts making it run.
.
I would like to see hunting with bows allowed honestly, 30-40 years ago no but modern day there very efficient especially with what the american companies have been doing.

It's my recollection that it was to be debated during the 1981 w&c acts rewriting
A particular person had been tasked with tabling a motion on bow hunting that would enable its discussion and then subsequent vote !however he was late returning after a break cough and therefore the motion wasn't tabled discussed or voted on and bow hunting was omitted from the act

I had to deal with one last year, poor thing on a golf course, with a crossbow sticking out of its gut,
must have been a long shot?

Bows aren't illegal in the UK. It's just not legal for us to hunt with them, but when did that ever stop a poacher?
It's my belief that had bows been in common usage for shooting deer at the time that the first deer act was written, then they may well have been included as a legal means, with specified draw weights, arrow types, etc.
I have read several reasonably credible accounts that say that bows were discussed, and were deliberately excluded because if was believed that they were too quiet and too easily concealed, so too tempting as poaching tools. This helped by the fact that almost nobody used them to hunt at the time, except a relatively small population of hunters in the US.

We didn’t push to make bow hunting illegal, it had pretty much died out all on its own, but we did formally bury it.
As I’ve said, there was zero interest and that had been the case for a long time. I can’t think of anyone who was bow hunting in Ireland or the UK during the 60’s and 70’s when all this was going on.
The arguments regarding animal welfare and bow hunting I’m prepared to accept if you’ll accept that regardless of qualifications at national or international level, its still a Mk1 human being doing the shooting, prone to exactly the same failings whether armed with a bow or a rifle or anything else. Bow hunters don’t automatically qualify for halo’s, they’ll get things wrong just the same as rifle shooters do.
I also don’t see bows as the answer to urban deer, a moderated .22 centre fire is a far better choice, that’s what the contractors in US urban areas are using and they could legally use bows if they wanted.
Hunting with a bow is a recognised handicap compared to a firearm, bow seasons in the US are used to limit the cull but increase hunter participation, hunters pay for conservation through licence fees etc so the model has been to get as many hunters involved as possible.
Here we’ve gone a different way, we limit access to those who can pay or make deer hunting pay.
If you want to bow hunt, have at it….but I don’t want to share ground with you.

Hmmm. Bows are nasty things - 2 experiences put me right off them.
First - at about 12 shooting a longbow on holiday in a field next to a holiday caravan site, couldn’t find one of the arrows and gave up looking for it. One pal, the bow owner found it when he went back to his folk’s caravan - punctured the caravan door by about 6 inches. That’s when I first heard of a ricochet and when he first learned that a bow across the backside was really painful.
Second - in the bad old days of “the Troubles” a good pal was standing in a street corner pub’s doorway in East Belfast at what was fondly known as “a flashpoint” area - i.e. the two “sides” had this mildly endearing habit of trying to burn each other out, when a crossbow bolt buried itself in the pub door - two inches from his head, he swears he was eating an apple at the time….

FB, I'm trying my best to not laugh...honest....

On a slight tangent my friend, I once crashed a car but still drive.....😘

Thats because the fishery laws and bylaws cover these methods allowed for taking of fish.
And spears too? From the bridge as they pass under. I think? But I think local bylaws now for decades since mostly prohibit the use of gaffs and tailers to land hooked fish.

Laugh away ol’ pal - with half a century of greater experience even I chuckle at those memories of my many early forays into ‘armed” outings - some were even legal…..
