I learnt that you can hunt in the UK with a catapult/slingshot. Can you hunt with a bow and arrow then?

And spears too? From the bridge as they pass under. I think? But I think local bylaws now for decades since mostly prohibit the use of gaffs and tailers to land hooked fish.
Sorry to side track but - Spears bring back a truly funny memory.
Many years ago my wife and I were working at apple picking on a farm near Ledbury. This farm employed students through the season and one of them was a lad called John. He was a good enough lad but liked a bit of a "puff" of whatever he could get his hands on from the local lads. At the time we had a couple of young lurcher pups that I was trying to bring on as coursing dogs. I had permission to set snares around the farm/orchards to get rabbits for the pot and often gave "oven ready rabbits" away to the students. (They never bothered asking how I got them just how to cook them) believing that I had caught them with my 2 young lurcher pups which were only 20 odd weeks old.(I could fool most of them in those days just for a laugh but they thought I had an amazing pair of pups) Anyway one day John came to me with a carrier bag and called me to one side. In it was a hen pheasant which he said he had hit with a stone. He asked me "should I hang it"? Well me being me just said "I wouldn't bother John, it looks pretty dead already" but I'll skin and dress it for you so you can make a stew up! I skinned it for him and told him how to cook it and said that maybe he would be better with a catapult for a few rabbits and that I had a spare one (I was pretty good with a catty and ball bearings in those days) that he could borrow to practice with, which he accepted. Anyhow a good few days later I asked him how he was getting on with the catty. He said he was useless with it but felt that he might do OK with a spear. I just fell to the ground piddling myself with laughter as I got an immediate picture of him running around the orchard stoned out of his mind while dressed in a leopard skin loin cloth chasing rabbits with a spear in his hand - He simply could not understand what I was laughing at!
I swear this story is 100% true!
We experienced so many good and funny things in the years that we were fruit and veg picking and I would not have wanted to miss a single day of it!

We didn’t push to make bow hunting illegal, it had pretty much died out all on its own, but we did formally bury it.
As I’ve said, there was zero interest and that had been the case for a long time. I can’t think of anyone who was bow hunting in Ireland or the UK during the 60’s and 70’s when all this was going on.
The arguments regarding animal welfare and bow hunting I’m prepared to accept if you’ll accept that regardless of qualifications at national or international level, its still a Mk1 human being doing the shooting, prone to exactly the same failings whether armed with a bow or a rifle or anything else. Bow hunters don’t automatically qualify for halo’s, they’ll get things wrong just the same as rifle shooters do.
I also don’t see bows as the answer to urban deer, a moderated .22 centre fire is a far better choice, that’s what the contractors in US urban areas are using and they could legally use bows if they wanted.
Hunting with a bow is a recognised handicap compared to a firearm, bow seasons in the US are used to limit the cull but increase hunter participation, hunters pay for conservation through licence fees etc so the model has been to get as many hunters involved as possible.
Here we’ve gone a different way, we limit access to those who can pay or make deer hunting pay.
If you want to bow hunt, have at it….but I don’t want to share ground with you.
Dont think i mentioned bow hunters being superior or elitist. However the international bow hunting test is way more real than the DSC1 test as regards to field use. More mistakes are made by unqualified persons , hence i support testing with Bow or rifle .
22 CF cannot be said to be as safe as a bow just as regards over carry alone , most of us with plenty time in will have had a bullet ricochet its just not all of us realise it has occurred. the backstop and the backdrop is far reduced and that i feel is a big point in urban culling
What the heck is wrong with more hunters of deer ? We have calls for mass culls , including night culling and calls for helicopters !
Always been a guy with a 50-50 view on hunter numbers , one thing is for sure though ( more joining us sure as heck makes deerstalking as a recreation far more secure for the future ) .
Not wanting to share ground ? strange one , not sure what you even mean tbf, is that an elitist illusion of superior status ? or Thinking stalking rights might become more costly or less Costly ? Nobody can predict either but as i hint if we have more Voters hunting than Anti Hunters campaigning ,,, How can that ever be a bad thing ? What actually stopped Fox hunting was the amount of voters protesting against those in support . In the USA its certainly the other way around , take a guess who will retain their hunting rights the longest .... !
Bow hunting isnt the most humane or effective method of killing deer but then taking out clients on the Hill without them having adequate practice and training is far from ideal viewed with cold hard reality . The Bow hunter with their international bow hunting test done however ? Well its internationally recognised which it one up on DSC and or 3 shots on a target with the estate rifle .

Next week, he came towing a trailer with a tarp over it.

What's in the trailer John?

I don’t want to share ground with you because the 2 hunting methods and objectives are incompatible.
You want to cammo up and sneak through the timber, or sit silently in a blind until a deer gets within 50M and then wait for a single perfect broadside opportunity.
Your primary objective is not the deer, its the experience of the hunt itself. Which is fine by me if that’s what you want.
I enjoy the hunt, but that enjoyment is often a secondary consideration, I need to shoot deer, so I’ll take whatever offers up to 200M and I’ll take 2 or 3 at a time if they offer, in the most efficient and least disruptive manner I can.
I focus on results rather than method or the experience because I have a cull to achieve and limited time to achieve it.
I won’t vote against you, but I won’t vote for you either.

People need to separate the cull from the stalking . Indeed i will shoot double said distance culling when required in suitable conditions and a clear need ( ie no way of getting closer where i will be far more likely to shoot a bunch more of the group) . Bow hunting on the other hand is something i would like to do , getting in real close and passing up anything that i wasn't just quite sure of getting the desired result .
One does not effect the other Unless both are on the same ground at the same time ! This is why much public hunting land abroad has a bow season or even a muzzle loading season .
why might a guy choose to fish with a fly rod , instead of a Gill net ?

Gill nets are illegal in freshwater 😁

Strange attitude IMHO

I bought a crossbow rifle, actaully scared me 😂 debated getting rid of it but now Im keeping for the apocalypse along with my madmax costume - not expecting it to see much use in my life time, its all talk talk talk with world leaders these days.
Tell that to the displaced citizens of Ukraine.

Dont see any relevance but i would rather have gill nets at sea than pair trawlers taking game fish then the sprats , sand eels etc for fertilizer ( there are why salmonoids go to see in the first place )
The relevance is that you asked " why might a guy choose to fish with a fly rod , instead of a gill net ? "
