Lever action

Didn’t tell you anything you didn’t wanna hear…
Maybe not...

I've had a slight wobble in the meantime, and added an authority for a 44 magnum to my variation as well. For now it'll be one or the other 44 or 45-70... But with an open slot on the ticket who knows what could happen in a year or two?!

Simon, where are you based? If we can meet up at a suitable venue you can try my .44 lever action?

Drop me a PM if I can help.

Just one more thing (alright, Columbo...)

Have any of you fine folks given any thought or research into what will become of these rifles if (dare I say when?) lead ammunition is banned?
To my mind, if we escape a total ban it will likely still be banned for live quarry. It looks to me as if there are very few, if any, non-lead options for the common lever calibres, even looking at US websites with stuff we don't get over here. In the case of something like a 45-70, where factory ammo is already costly, I could see copper hitting daft money per box 😣

My heart wants a lever action still (I had a play with a Marlin the other day. Shooting 38 special offhand into a ragged hole at 25 yards was very grin-inducing) but I wonder if a big bore lever gun is not a wise choice for stalking in the long term...

Stock and shut up 😊

Can you imagine the size of the job scrapping ammo because it was outlawed over night?
You need to do it, do it now, get some simple reloading tools and present finger to the very thoughts you are having, the very manifestation of the real hidden agenda behind the lead ban nonsense.
Columbo lol, my wife plays him all the time.........😩

I think any non-lead ammo at the moment is carrying a real premium but as it becomes more wide spread the cost difference will narrow somewhat.

For 45-70, more non-lead ammo will become available from more manufacturers. The same will be true of 44 mag and 357 Mag (Barnes and Hornady certainly sell it, I should think Federal will do shortly if they don't already).

Prvi and S&B will be on the band wagon soon I'm sure if they aren't already. Geco markets lead .44 Mag ammo for hunting (Has a picture of a deer on the box) and they do quite a lot of more "budget friendly" ammo so might well get there as well.

The market hates a vacuum!

It is another argument for reloading though.

So, for a 30-30 you can always load any .30 bullet. If you need to go lead free and can't get a HP, RN, FP etc, you can load a lead free spitzer and have one in the chamber, one in the mag.

No reason not to ahead and scratch your lever itch!

I understand one producer does make a 30-30 suitable option. Dunno who though.

To be brutally honest being a lead lover a light other type say around 120gn will certainly make a 30-30 scoot along quite rapidly going off cranking up light bullets in the past.
Flattens it out a treat. Couldn't care less about ft/lbs mumbo jumbo.
Winchester, Browning and Roosevelt didn't and neither do I.

Roosevelt had a fondness for the Model 1894 in 30-30 (or what we refer to as John M. Browning's “Saturday Night Special Design”) from the time it was first introduced. He was dubious at first of the “tiny smokeless powder cartridge” but changed his mind after dropping a pronghorn antelope at about 220 yards

Do any of the manufacturers do a .22 hornet in laver action, would be really interested.
Not to my knowledge . I can't think of any lever action repeaters chambered for the Hornet , single shots like the Winchester Low Wall and Ruger No3s are kicking around though . There were a number of levers chambered in 218 Bee , like the Winchester 92 and the Marlin 1894 . It's a shorter cartridge that the Hornet and feeds through the short action . It's a lot easier to find a lever action in 25/20 or 32/20 around here though , 218 chambered rifles are a bit scarce .

It's a shame about the Bee and 219 zipper.

I'd not look twice at a BLR, it's an ugly, hump-backed monstrel of a rifle.
I'd definitely consider a Henry Long Ranger, though, in .308.
