Anyone ever use WD40 to keep flies off a pony?

A friend of mine reckons a light spray along the spine works very well.

Just moved our fella into a fresh field and he's fairly pestered by them especially after shedding his winter coat. I have plenty cans of WD40 but is it alright to use?

Any half hippy remedies out there?

We have nettles and mint and loads of other stuff, could I make some kind of concoction?

VSS, I'm gonna value your opinion because you know a lot of stuff about this kind of stuff.

Any and all other input will be read but I'm not interested in links or ideas that will involve me having to do a lot of work or spending a lot of money.

His tail is working away there like a Newtons Cradle and that's what nature intended but it'd be nice to give him a bit of a rest.

Baby oil. It works because the midges can't get sucha a grip. Doesn't work for biger flies

But you do get funny looks in the chenist when you ask for several bottles....

Have never tried WD40 but the best stuff we have ever used is this. Doesn’t sting, smells ok and doesn’t melt plastics. Icaridin is the same as in Smidge

Wouldnt use WD40 on an animal. It contains paraffin and makes plastic go brittle so dont use it. GT085 is a better alternate. I‘m sure there must be people on an equine forum that have recommendations

Citronella.
Don't use citronella oil neat though, or it'll burn. I learned that the expensive way: Ruined a cow's udder.
Mix it with almond oil or baby oil.

We're using this at the minute and it looks to be doing the job but the horse flys aren't out yet. It seems to go quite far for the money unlike alot of the other stuff.

Personally I'd prefer to use something that's going to cause the horrible little b**tards a slow agonising death, not just keep them away.

The money pit that I sponsor Jack is given garlic powder & Feedmark Flyoff in his twice daily feeds for the last 18 month.
The Cruelty Officer(Wife) said it's made a difference so far this summer.
Baillistol Animal & Avon skin soft are OK for for a quick fix.

WD40 very good against vicious nasty dogs up the nostrils and mouth region, but obviously not tried myself.
Easy start good also.
