Anyone extensively used those Ozzie / NZ type
Kennels?

I’ve seen a fair few making appearances on farms recently.

Pee and poop supposed to fall through the slats if they can’t wait to be let out.

Up off the ground, if placed on concrete then easily cleaned underneath.

They look pretty decent.

Simpler solution to regularly soiled kennels……exercise your dogs more.
I used Kiwi style kennels when I was in NZ and much prefer a kennel and run you can walk into.
Far easier for cleaning if there are any accidents but you shouldn’t be using your kennels as a “dumping” zone for your dogs.

I've seen those kennels with such big piles of **** under them that it's up to the slats. Not nice.

What about those that exercise their dogs just fine, don’t soil in the kennels, but still are interested in what these kennels are like?

I’ve seen plenty of ‘traditional type’ kennels full of excrement and ****.

The Kiwi style kennels are second rate in design and user ease of use to the likes of a Mitton Hall kennel

Your first post inferred that a benefit was that any pee and poo would fall through the slats which it actually doesn’t and you end up with pee and poo on the slats and the ground underneath, so double the cleaning.

I speak from the experience of a station I worked at where some dogs were in the kennels longer than others.

You can’t beat a nice bit of polished concrete that you can wash out and squeegee dry if you’re needing to clean up.

Terrible animal care.

Not sure that’s down to the type of kennel used though.

Strangely one of the ones I saw was over grass and had a lot of crap underneath.

I do see that as an advantage.

My mate has kennels and has his dogs out multiple times a day, lives next to a huge reserve, taken out for a long run morning, down beach every night and out during the day, and a select few of his will still soil in their kennel.

It absolutely does his head in.

Could understand raised runs in Oz to stop snakes going in, but I never seen any kennels like that when I was over, mibbee a new thing.
Dunno if snakes going in is even a problem? When I was out just the same as uk either proper runs or a sleeping box/barrel and a chain.

U used to build ferret hutches like that.

Don't look very big runs?
Be a pain cleaning muck from below if u have multiple runs joined on to each other

Thats a really bad design, you need to clean both top and bottom so at least twice the cleaning effort with no way to stand up and get properly stuck in to either midden.
No advantage to the pup either.

Just exploring the options and can see they’re not going to be favoured then.

Probably thinking same as how their cows sheds are set up, but they recycle the cow crap that falls through the slats. You need to pick it up and as mentioned above, it would be easier to clean up from a slab than climbing about underneath that cage.

Aye I bet it would be surprising how many are still kennelled that way.

The worst I seen was just a garden shed type sleeping box, no run no windows. All the doors were scratched to hell.
It's only the 1 big hill farm but 3 herds + owners all kenneled the same why.
To be fair the herds digs would be out all day with them the owners would rarely be out, poor things.

I dunno if it's to stop snakes or possibly cooler for dogs in Oz as get a breeze below them if lying out throu the day?.
Be interested to know the reason they like them

The only positive thing I can see might be forlabs/ breeds potentially with hip problems as being low roof hieght they couldnae stand up on back legs.
But if that was an issue I'd still think easier to have a concrete slab and squeeze any dirt of it.

I think they would work just fine. If the dogs are well exercised and just need security and shelter - no problem. I bought a whippet lurcher from George Kelly of Brownhills in 1990 and his kennels were similar to oversized rabbit/ferret hutches yet they were always meticulously clean and the dogs always in very fine fettle.

That's a dickhead owner not a kennel design issue.

Say what ya want about this design but I'll bet if ya used them over here, then the RSPCA would be knocking to say what a horrible person you were, may get away with it on a farm but ya Jo bloggs in suburbia would get too much grief

They're pretty popular over here, and fairly common on farms now.
