THE PRETEND KEEPER

I have largely given up on work parties, most promise empty promises. We have had to borrow a digger and trench the water pipe in under ground because of the constant attack by squirrels. Our poults are £6.50 each this year at 8 weeks old. Most of the smaller shoots round here are getting their birds this week or next. Hope we get some decent weather.

My lads are brilliant - but you have to keep on at them and keep them motivated

Cant you get anyone to shoot squirrels - WOW i would have a queue round the block and back

I am sure I could get someone in to shoot some of the squirrels, but I would worry about what else they might shoot. I would rather do it myself. I go for them after the season and before the leaf comes out, but there still seems too many.

Got to let go of the reigns sometimes 30-06
If the lads are coming to help they deserve a bit of fun too
Maybe mentor them if they are not sure - let them do the heavy lifting in a morning and a have an hour on a feeder after the greys after ?

Well I’m getting there, pen fence repaired at my second pen ( Gordon’s) new shelter also built in Gordon’s pen, bird tape put up in both pens (if you have a BOP problem use it, it really does work) a finish off bits on Saturday and I’m ready to go, they combined the oats and oilseed rape at the back of the farm yesterday which has made me very happy
I also spent half an hour cleaning out the guttering at the farm house, not really what I want to be doing but I need to keep the old girl happy, payment was a cucumber and 1kg of brambles, which will be turned into my now famous bramble gin for the shoot days 👍IMG_7838.webpIMG_7839.webpIMG_7840.webpIMG_7842.webpIMG_7845.webp

Good looking shelters.

Mine (outside the Pen) are twice as high, half the surface area, and consequently, four times as shite!

I really must do better next year...

Your shelters look great but I would suggest they are too close to the ground. Mine are two foot six high sloping down to two feet. If your birds don't use them then it would be easy to extend them vertically a little.

They are 22” on one side, going down to 18” on the other side, they don’t want to be any higher than a couple of foot 👍

What a great thread this is
Great to see people who really love what they do

I have been filling the feeders and storage barrels in the covers
Its the second year for so much and third for some so some of the cover with the weather we have had is 8 ft tall - so i have been driving through bits of it to let the birds get into it
Also been pottering about today tidying up - the old water tubs - old bits of fence etc

Put a drain in across the car park to this week - its at the bottom of the hill so is usually like the sea - but its much better nowIMG_1864.webp

The wraith won't zero?? How bad was the fall?
Do all the other functions work?
It was hung on a post and dropped about 4 foot, everything works as you would expect it to but it will not zero, you can take a shot, move to zero, take another shot and it can be 6” out, I’m going to do a factory reset on it and try again

A phone call earlier from from my mate saying they have just finished the wheat and been a few deer knocking about, so my mate a shout who I’d told a few weeks ago that once the fields were clear he could take a buck from there, I would of liked it to be a bit more exciting but within 15 minutes we were on a buck, no stalk, just waited for it to present a shot and down it went at around 80 yards, a perfect neck shot and dropped on the spot, one happy lad IMG_7858.webpIMG_7859.webpIMG_7860.webp

Nice outing for him - good man.
Can I ask is he left eye dominant? My pal is right-handed but left eye dominant - hence his very odd stance.

If the eye isn't impaired ware some glasses, prescription or safety. Note which part of the lens the dominant eye wants to look through when attempting to aim with the weak eye.
Now add a piece of pea sized tape to that part of the glasses the dominant eye is using.
This usually forces the brain to look through the correct eye and usually fixes the condition in short time.

Your the first person to notice that, he has a problem with his right eye so looks through the scope with his left, he doesn’t miss much so it obviously works for him, he also shoots shotgun left handed, very strange 😂

I’m right handed, can only close my right eye on its own, if I try to close just my left, both close, I can’t even mount a gun properly right handed so shoot left, I’m spot on with a rifle but give me a shotgun and it could be pointing anywhere 😂🤪

Yep - I spotted it right away when I first took him shooting - even more odd when watching him shoot pistol - you would think he was watching the guy in the next bay at the same time!
