Cleaning barrel frequency 22/250

Can anyone give advice on how frequently or how many rounds before you clean the barrel of my remmy 700 22/250 for instance last week I fired 3 rounds through it should I be cleaning it after.
Kind regards Andrew

No need for 'deep cleaning' after only a few rounds but not wrong with 'soft cleaning' to get rid of possible damp in barrel this time of the year.

I usually use boretec carbon remover for lighter cleaning. I do it after each outing when I've fired at least 1 shot. I'll run 1 oil patch down it and 1 dry one and put it away. Not had any accuracy problems.

I'll often remove the bolt and look for damp.
I'll often leave the rifle by the warm chimney breast for a few hours. If in doubt I just run a loose patch through but a chemical clean I don't do very often.

With your hornet you should take more care!
Water vapour is a by product of combustion believe it or not.
Most high power rifles generate enough heat to the barrel surface that the vapour never gets to condense on the barrel inside.
Hornet though doesn't get the steel hot enough!
I have lost count of the times how many beads of water I have seen just forward of the hornet chamber after a shot on a cold day! And I've lost count of how many hornets I've seen with pits just forward of the chamber on a hornet!!

Run a loose patch through the hornet after every outing or use a loose pull through. You probably could spray something from the breech and store the rifle muzzle down on a rag.
Oh, and remove the can every time or better still, never use it!

I must thankyou gentlemen for all your advice it’s invaluable,I’m currently trialing this ppu ammunition and don’t know if it will need more cleaning because of using it

I didn’t find PPU particularly dirty, the Remington Express SPs however are filthy, they also produce a very strong smell of sulphur with every shot.

How did you get on with the ppu stuff I shot some at 100 yards with my 22/250 and it wasn’t too bad for grouping but only fired 3 rounds as barrel became hot

Surprisingly good, not far off the Hornady for groups. I think I tried both 50 & 55 and there was nothing in it.
I picked some up for just £15 a box so let my son rattle a few off on paper.

The best I have found are the Norma 50gr Vmax but they are crazy expensive now. When I bought them they were reduced at Bushwear so I bought my allowance in them.

I load my own now and have got pretty much identical results with the same velocity as the Norma, but for a fraction of the cost.

I also tried a box of Federal 40gr Vmax and they were mustard but strangely the Federal 55 SP were rubbish.

Exactly this👆. Please don't ask me how I know it's true about the 22 Hornet. Still shoots though.

You've got two of the best cartridges right there 👍 IMO. You'll not regret reloading for both of them and really wake them up.

To be honest I really are not ready for home loading yet that’s why I’m looking at this cheaper ppu ammunition for my 22/250 I do already have Norma 50 and 55 grain here but want to use it more for killing long range crows on the golf courses were I shoot so that’s why I’m looking at ppu also haven’t tried it in my 17 hornet or 22 hornet yet

I clean nearly all my guns after use . Shotguns , CF rifles including a 22 hornet !. One exception is one is one of the .22 rf rifles as i might need to take a difficult shot within a short window .
You cannot replicate a state of dirty only one of clean . The exception is a RF that is lubricated , that's normally fine as you can pop one off before you get into the hunt , The CF rifles i own or have owned have all shot to POA cold clean bore as makes no matter anyhow .
Leaving muck in a barrel does trap condensation and sometimes metallic reaction corrosion. This leads to Pitting and rusting
A safe should have some desiccant bags spread around in it .
However you only need to do this with the ones you want to keep!

Henry Krank was doing some value bullet company .17 hornet bullets at a low , low price . I have used some 22 hornet 40 grain PPU bullets and Brass in the .22 hornet and frankly you would never find a difference in then with my best handload "on quarry" inside 200 yards.

To be honest that’s what I’m after both my hornets are Cz and if they will shoot reasonably accurate out to 200 yards with the ppu ammunition in both 22 and 17 I will be happy

A single pull through with a boresnake after every outing when the gun is fired - and the moderator removed
A deeper clean with copper solvent when accuracy degrades

Cheers
