You will need to satisfy UK Firearms Licensing that the firearm has been exported. This will usually require an export certifcate - exportcontrol.help@businessandtrade.gov.uk may be able to help.

Taking it yourself sounds like a good idea as you are very unlikely to find a courier.
Be sure your friend is reallllllly keen, because the process is a wearing.
There may also be VAT and import duties to consider.

How to leave the UK without a valid SGC and a shotgun in the baggage and he could not first give it to the friend to take without him having a SGC. Am I missing something or can a UK visitors SGC certificate cover buying one here?

"A Visitor’s Shotgun Permit can be issued with permission to buy shotguns in the UK and export them. This privilege is not available for a Visitor’s Firearm Permit."
as above , but ask your friend to check his country law regarding bringing it back and customs and tax etc
