hi hope this is not a daft question but can some one tell me. can i use a 308cal mod on a 243cal both are threaded 1/2 in (just trying to save some money in tight times atb john

Hi mate, the simple answer is yes I have a 30 cal pes mod on my .243 works a treat mate, had a mates .243 mod on it and cant notice any difference.

yes mate it will work ok might be slightly louder due to the hole size but quieter than without, atb wayne

Yes indeed, I use the one .30 cal mod on both my .243 (Sako 75) and my .30-06 (Tikka T3) and they both have the 1/2 UNF screw cut.

Indecently, I was told by several people that cutting a ½ UNF thread on a .30 cal barrel was not feasible and encouraging me to by a different mod with a different thread and that they could supply and fit it…..

The mod sleeves over the barrel and I don’t use my rifle as a walking stick or to beat thing to death with so should be absolutely fine. Morale of the story is always hunt about and get different peoples opinions. Some suck their teeth and the money signs appear in their eyes (like every mechanic I have ever met!) and others are delightfully honest and tell you how it is even if they have potentially talked you out of a sale. However I remember who said what and will do business accordingly.

Not sure how much clearance various moderator makes give the bullets but I have used a .243 Wildcat P8 on the 6.5x55 with no problems. In fact I used the same moderator on the .243, 25-06 and 6.5x55. Checked a 0.277" bullet and it would not enter the baffle stack so concluded that 0.264" (6.5mm was the maximum). Before using the moderator on the 25-06 I spoke to the makers and they said it would be fine. I checked clearance on the 6.5mm bullet before deciding myself it would be OK.

Only ended up with the .243 Moderator due to a mix up in the shop the packaging tube said .308.

Cheers Paul

You can do this for the Wildcat too but I decided that as the .280 was going to have irons fitted a muzzle mounted can would be my best choice.

I think you will find you have to buy a new front end as the stack is a fixed part of it. I'm sure if you saw the tld mod you would understand what I ment. It also has a removable threaded bush so if your like me with rifles threaded metric and imperial you can change that too its the first truly modular moderator I've ever seen

most moderators now are cut with metric bore
6.5mm is usually packaged at up to .223
7mm up to .25x
7.5mm up to 270/280
8/8.5mm up to .3xx etc etc

I have a mod that was sold to me for my rimfire and has a 6.5mm bore
works a charm for 6mm/.243 but is a bit on the close side at .25mm clearance for most manufacturers to list it as a "up to 6mm" moderator

yes i have a wildcat moderator for my .308, use same moderator on my .243. just bought a 243 bridge and delring bush for the varmint barrell works a treat, bridge and bush cost £50-00 saving me £200-00
