As a side note I’ve killed seven deer with that 6.5x54 MS each with a different 140 handloaded bullet all using the same sight in ! At present it has three bullets in it a Barnes 120 TSX , Hornady 123 SST and a Hornady 129 SST , these needed site adjustments but those three are all close enough using the same sight in !

Behold…the “new to me” Mauser Model 77 Bavarian Carbine
.243
S&B 6x42
Swing off mounts (Apel I think?…but please correct if you know better🤔 👍)
Makers case

Massive thanks to @SDC7x57 for having the patience of a saint and being prepared to hold this for me whilst my renewal was being processed. (D&C 15month backlog 🫣)

So a few days of fettling ahead and am itching to hear this beauty barking out in the field.

It will sit alongside my little Mauser 201 .22LR both truly quality rifles with a level of finish that is hard to find off the shelf these days. The 60degree bolt throw locks up like a bank vault. The all metal magazine locks up and offers smooth rattle free operation…. I know Stutzen rifles aren’t in high demand but it doesn’t concern me as this one is a keeper 🫶

I’ve been tryin* to upload a video but alas I can’t seem to get it to upload 🤔

I’m in the market for a nice period leather sling if anyone has a nice one they want to part with 👍

A few more pics… and lots of cool features on this old girl

The mag release is great…press buttons on either side and it falls needle into your hand without fuss…very ergonomic

The safety has its own release catch. To flick it off you push the sprung portion built into the saftey fwd and this allows you to disengage the safety

The set trigger is engaged by 1st disengaging the saftey and then depressing the smaller button catch behind the safety catch. The set trigger is at my guess around 1lb. To disengage the set trigger simply flick the safety back to SAFE & pull the trigger. Next time the safety is disengaged your back to standard trigger and just need to push the button to set the trigger again if desired

Crown appears to have done next to nothing!

There is a little creep when not using the set trigger but it’s predictable with good feel

The bolt is lovely…I plan to polish it up to make a smooth action very slick..

60degree throw thanks to the 3x lugs. Different design but the the bolt feels very much like the one in my little 201 22lr in operation

Ah just lovely.

I have been looking for a Mauser 66 or 77 actually in 308 or 7mm rem mag.

There was one 77 on ebay last time I looked in 243. I love old Mausers ❤️

Please show us your groups when you get a chance :)

I had a CZ 550-FS a year or two ago in 6.5x55 , very accurate gun with my handloads . The set trigger made it easy to shoot it well . Killed one deer with it which honestly was of no surprise . I never did however care for the hog back comb on that rifle . At the time I had that 550-FS I was also looking for a 550-FS in 9.3x62 , thought they’d make a nice pair !

What a gem! I hope this will be heard barking in the Glynn Valley on a huge Red in the not too dim and distant? Just back upcountry from Liskeard, but a Red in Cornwall is on my List of New Year’s resolutions. We must see a pic of her first kill…
