'We Can't Eat Trees!'

One of the comments on "Scribehound" the website run by Guns on Pegs following an excellent article on the differing moral and ethical standards in farming around the globe pointed out the idiocy of the George Monbiot passion for "offshoring" our food supplies. The article focused on farming beef in feed lots in Sumatra which has a huge population and significant food poverty. The expectation is to feed people and employ many in order to give them a living wage. That is the priority and need. Analogous to the immigration problem in the UK I do not believe that we can solve this by giving control to a third country (neither a source of the migrants nor the desired destination country). We must provide a major part of our own food; we already have too many people to completely feed ourselves. Our short-term viewed politicians cannot rely eternally on cheap imported food anymore than we can on cheap imported labour. The genuinely sustainable need for food is existential to human life. Rant over.

Scottish Government planting grant budget cut by 1/3rd in last weeks spending review.
At the same time they reiterated their goal to plant 18000 ha a year 🤔🤷
