I should have said it’s because Dave is building me a .284 with a t3 action and a 24” sassen light varmint tube in a 1-8.5” twist. I’m trying to build a reasonably light ish stalking rifle that’s going to be well good enough for long range foxesI use 60 but a 116 g LTS
Speedy and accurate
I bought a Tikka-based 284W from an SD member that came with some rounds. They were the ones he used for F-Class shooting and I did some good 100yrd groups with them. I pulled one and weighed the(N165) powder at 51.2 grns.Hi
Does anyone have any experience with N150 or N165 in the above mentioned looking for starting loads I've not decided on bullets yet so any loads data using these powders would be appreciated.
Cheers Matt
I tried RS60 @ 51.5g, 162g ELD-X & 162g A-Max with MV 2,836ft/sec and reasonable results but always came back to Hodgdon 4831-SC. I’ve got 2 and a bit tubs of Hodgdon 4831-SC if anyone’s interested, I’m in the process of re-barrelling the .284 so surplus to requirements.Bit late to jump into this thread but it’s better than starting a new onedoes anyone have and experience with rs 60/62 with the 150-162 eldx in .284? Just I’ve a few tubs lying here and would be handy if I could use some of it up
thanks
Both them powders are in the rs/60-62 range so hopefully I can make something work. I will hopefully get a decent mv and accuracy fingers crossed. Be w while yet as the barrel needs to be ordered from sassen then built so end of Feb probably. Oh I do like a new build and the challenge of getting it shootingH4831sc was allegedly the go to powder, alas no longer available. I've been trying N165 under 184s in a 30", 2720 for 53.9gr in near 0 Deg C temps.
A very reliable source has suggested N555 gives very low ES in 284s.
I managed to find 2lb of H4831sc on a shelf about a month ago, so the 3+ lbs that I now have should see my barrel out at 55Grns a shot.H4831sc was allegedly the go to powder, alas no longer available. I've been trying N165 under 184s in a 30", 2720 for 53.9gr in near 0 Deg C temps.

Thats the issue for sure, finding a decent amount of what you wantI managed to find 2lb of H4831sc on a shelf about a month ago, so the 3+ lbs that I now have should see my barrel out at 55Grns a shot.
If I get the MV &ES I'm looking for with N555, I'll have 4kg of N165 from same batch up for grabs. Both them powders are in the rs/60-62 range so hopefully I can make something work. I think Laurie suggested N165 as a cool powder. I have some H1000 that is supposed to be even cooler.Thats the issue for sure, finding a decent amount of what you wantfingers crossed one of my powders will do as it’s bad to get at times like
