Coterminous query

My shotgun certificate is due to be renewed in May and I've been notified I need to get a medical questionnaire completed. My FAC expires in September 2025 so I thought I'd try and arrange coterminous certificates to save having to go through the same hurdle next year.
When I suggested this to the firearms licensing department I was told they could do it if my FAC expired first but not the other way around, suggesting this was within the home office guidance? I have to say I was somewhat sceptical.
Has anyone had a similar experience?

I applied for my first shotgun certificate a year before my FAC expired and they were happy to renew my FAC early at the same time and give me a coterminous certificate for the next 5 years. This was in Herts 2 years ago.

Which force issued your tickets

Hertfordshire Constabulary, but the Firearms officer who I dealt with is now retired, so I can't say the current ones will do the same.

Unfortunately I can't see that many forces will deviate from the HOG anymore
A few years ago several forces with the agreement of the FAC holder brought forward renewals by a year in anticipation of a backlog (originally caused when FAC's went from 3 years to five years). Tames Valley police was one of those forces perhaps Hertfordshire was another.

Tha basic reason is that you cannot shorten the life of a firearms certificate, it's written into the Act. As has been suggested renew your sgc again when you come to renew your FAC, the difference is about £2.

Thats how I had to do mine 3-4 renewals ago, I agree it makes little sense but thats the guidelines they follow, bite the bullet with this sgc then coterminus and save when you do the fac, its cheaper in the long run just a daft way to go about it

However to flatten the curve of lots of renewals they do on occasion, offer early renewals, and in doing so shorten the life of an fac
