Switch/lever on Baikal .410

Bought a Baikal today, .410 single barrel, anyone have any idea what the catch is for under the action?

I’ve tried all manner of configurations to see what it does but it seems to make no difference to any operation, gun does need a good scrub and oil but wondered if it’s to disengage the ejector for opening with a live in the chamber.

Had the odd one empty pop over my shoulder but some barely eject so need to scrub the chamber as it’s filthy but wondered if anyone could tell me if I’m correct along these lines?

You are correct, moving the lever before opening just withdraws the round or empty if you've fired.
