Recoil pad came off Blaser R8 professional success

I got back from a routine foxing trip the other night nothing out of the ordinary happened. Only took one shot of some sticks and I noticed that the whole recall pad came off the back of the Blaser stock. Not sure when it happened and can’t find it Has anyone seen this happen before I can’t quite work out whether there’s more missing than just the recoil pad. If anyone knows anything about the way these are put together. Could you please give me some advice. I’ve contacted Blaser UK and hoping that under the 10 year warranty they will be able to replace the parts. I was concerned because I couldn’t see where the screws going. It looks like a bit of another assembly is come off as well as the recoil pad. If anyone has any experience on eye of this please let me know. Thanks James

Thanks for posting those photographs Dr:Rock. Sorry to hear of your loss but I'm sure Blaser will replace it under warranty.
Very interesting construction, strikes me as very similar to the stock construction on my Mauser M18, which I will have paid considerably less for than your R8. That makes me feel very smug as I obviously got a bargain. Also it looks like the gimmicky detachable recoil pad on the M18 may actually be a more secure method of attachment.

Thanks for this. Yes the cost of the R8 one expects a bit more here. Mauser is owned by Blaser maybe they use similar construction. Apparently the R8PS stock cost £900,000 to develop!! It looks like it has just broken off. Hopefully Blaser will sort it !!
 
What was holding it on? Just looks like plastic and polystyrene to me. Not exactly quality construction.

I agree I can’t work out exactly what has come off there don’t see to be any screw holes and something else is missing. I like the rifle and the stock works well for me but unimpressed with this.

£900K sounds to me like a bit of CAD work then a normal injection moulding tool in quality steel and heat treatment being made with sliders needed to release the undecuts plus the cost afterwards of graining the tools customer visible surfaces then some tool trials. Same as any other plastic stuff like glove box lids or car bumpers and with the low volumes involved they will add the tooling cost to each one sold. 3D printing might be a way to go in the future.

That's just what I was thinking as I also have a M18 synthetic. 😁
 
The pad is held on by screws - which you can barely see under normal circumstances - they are hidden under tiny slits in the pad itself

They must have failed somehow - though I can't imaging how

I'm sure it is a simple replaceable bit of kit

Thanks in the picture I’ve sent it doesn’t show any visible screw reception holes so I wonder if another piece has come off as well. As you say the screws should not have failed so I’m wondering if something came off piecemeal including the pad and screws. I’ve sent the photos to Blaser Uk. Hopefully they’ll get back to me tomorrow

The recoil pad should of been screwed in place with two hex screws.
I've literally replaced a worn recoil pad only minutes ago.
I can only say that yours must have been faulty in some way?
Mine has had a very rough life , been dropped multiple times. Fell on, stood on and dunked in water.
The only way to treat a blaser i say..

Mine has had a privileged and precious life compared with yours all the more for wondering how this could have just come off !!

When you take the pad off does it look the same as my picture? Are those the screw holes in the picture in that case it looks easy to fix!

By the looks of things yours is missing a black plastic moulding that sits just inside the moulding of the stock.
The whole recoil assembly on mine appears to be some how fixed into what looks like black polystyrene that fills the inside of the plastic stock.
If i were you and need to use the rifle tomorrow. I'd Gorilla glue and gaffer tape the recoil pad back in place.
Or use some good old self tapping four inch screws.

Thanks that looks like the missing part. Unfortunately I don’t have the missing parts I only discovered after getting home that they were missing. Otherwise I agree but somehow feel something as expensive as this should have not failed so easily! Looks like I need that plastic moulding which looked glued in as there is some residue inside the stock 2 screws and a new recoil pad. Thanks again that was helpful !

One thing's for sure. I'll be taking a bit more care with mine now I know it's only held in place by Polystyrene :D

I’ve just checked again. That black moulding with the hex screw receivers moulding is held in place by gorilla glue or super glue so the screws and recoil pad come out piecemeal! That’s what happened to mine I’m sure Yeah need to be wary 🫤

Wow this sounds interesting. Even so I expected the “non-customer visible surfaces” of the Blaser to look a bit more robust than this and the recoil assembly not to be “glued in”. Like a toy from a Chinese factory 🥺

Not much evidence of adhesive used to join the insert to shell of the stock in the original photographs suggesting to me that this was definitely a manufacturing defect. I'm confident that Blaser will quickly rectify the problem, hopefully by replacing the entire stock.

To my mind the stock that Sheamus put a photograph of in post #14 looks like they may have only used the very minimum of adhesive to bond the two components together. There again I always go way over the top when securing things- belt, braces and a piece of string. Great unless you ever need to take it apart again. :rolleyes:

I actually think that the system used to hold the but plate on the M18 may be better. Especially as they've now introduced a series of different length but pads to adjust length of pull, so not so gimmicky after all. (I just haven't found a use for the small storage space yet.)
