Just preparing for a May trip to South Africa for my son and I. We are both shooting Blaser R8, his in left hand configuration..

I just cut the foam in the Pelican 1700 cases, great fit for the Blaser R8 with 2 scoped barrels, easy travel was one of the key reasons for buying a Blaser R8.

Hope this helps anyone thinking about a Blaser R8 or how to travel with a Blaser R8 with 2 barrels

That looks excellent… I found the relatively soft foam provided gave way with the weight of the components during travel. Nothing got damaged but i wouldn’t have flown again using the same foam. After a thread on here I ordered Shadowfoam which is very much more dense and resilient. Hopefully this will be a more long lasting solution. Your foam may be different.

Peli cases bomb proof I have 1720 it’s been to SA, Namibia, Turkey and Scotland has a few scratches and marks on it but still rock solid. I bought a couple of sets of middle foams as I have both 270 and 300wm both Sauer 404’s so easy to take stock off

What's the process of leaving / Re-entering the UK with your rifles ? I am looking at taking my rifle abroad with me in April, I know what the process is when I arrive on the other side and have that sorted, but wasn't sure if there is anything that needs to be done from the UK side as I am leaving? Filling out any forms or declaring anything etc.

Make sure you have told your airline that you are traveling with a firearm and ammunition, not every airline allows you to do this. Have whatever you need to enter the country you are visiting. Make sure you have everything correctly listed on your FAC and remember to take it with you. Allow lots of airport time, it seems as if ground security staff able to handle firearms are thin on the ground these days,

On return you will be escorted to customs, present your ticket and normally you are away pretty quickly.

Make sure you have nothing related to firearms or ammunition in your carry on baggage.

Good luck on your trip.

Thanks for the info,

I have already found requirements for the airline I will be booking with and sorted my arrival on the other side etc, I just didn't want to arrive at the airport for the UK customs to decide I needed some kind of form to fill out or other paperwork I would need to complete etc, as well as wondering how the return to the UK would work.

Sounds fairly painless, fingers crossed.

Thanks again for clearing that up.

A similar setup myself but left the trigger/mag in the stock and only needed 1 mag insert as both calibres used the same. I didn’t find the foam flimsy doing mine.

Might be silly question how did you cut the Foam out ????
I used a marker pen to make the outline, then a sharp knife for the short cuts and an electric carving knife for the longer cuts. It’s easier than you think. I cut just inside the marker lines to have a tight fit.

Good luck with yours.

I have the peli 1700 for my double rifle. The 1700 fits well in the boot of my car and is much more manageable than my peli 1720. Flown with the 1700 lots of times and it stands up to the baggage gorillas handling really well.

I have a Peli Storm case iM3200. I created the stencils and cut the foam - worked really well. I then upgraded bits of gear (different scope, stock, new moderator etc.) and the foam didn't fit. So what I do now is pack my rifle, scope etc. into an AIM drag bag which provides the padding and insert that into the Peli case. I leave one layer of foam in the case too. Snug fit. The barrel is disassembled from the stock to fit in the length of the Peli case. It has gone several times across Europe without issues. Also means I have a carry bag for when I am hunting. Might work with 2 barrels and 2 scopes....

Going on driven boar trips you are often met at the air port by the hunt organiser. Only once out of many trips has afull sized coach been used most often it's a mini/ small bus. Many of the hunters turn up with ridiculously large gun cases. We even had one trip where cases were layed across people's laps. The peli 1700 fits so much neater into the boot of a car or the back of a mini bus

Reminds me of a nightmare trip with Sleazyjet some years ago.
Being clever I had one stock and two barrels in the case so checked in and paid for 1 firearm. All good until security said “2 firearms” and counter person said you have to pay for 2 firearms at silly additional cost. I challenged them and asked for manager (Brunhilde - ripples in the coffee cup as it approached - you know the sort - Doc Martens and seven o’clock shadow which did nothing for her makeup!). Round and round we went, up and down, in and out ….. defo 2 firearms so pay the extortionate difference….
Sooo I asked if they carried skis - “of course we do (you old fool implicit in her every syllable);
“soooo do you charge per ski then?” says your man wearing his best smile….
Without a further word off she scuttled, muttering darkly, ripples in coffee cup again……

You can purchase additional foam inserts for the cases so you can have different set ups and layouts.
