Strange residue after nikwax wash

I have just washed my stalking jacket, using Nikwax TX Wash In Direct. I followed the instructions.

It came out covered in little squishy lumps of residue - hundreds of them, about 1-2mm across.

Does anyone know what has happened here, and where I need to worry? @NigelM - I’d be enormously grateful for your industry specific knowledge here, if you’re around. Jacket is a Norrona Kvinherrad. Goretex 3 layer membrane, some sort of synthetic brushed outer. Washed once with normal detergent first, then washed again with the Nikwax.

Jesus f in g Christ, just looked up the prices in those!!!!!!

been using these for longer than I can remember - quite expensive suce too, but I never use nikwax, I have before, and was always left disappointed with misc scummy residue

What do Nikwax and Norrona Kvinherrad say?
I'm just wondering if Nikwax is compatible with Gortex.

Tried all these, won’t use again. Cotton proof worst of the lot

I thought that you were advised to wash first without detergent ? Seem to recall some instructions to that effect on the bottle

Definitly says do not wash with detergent. Instructions say clean out detergent drawer first . Used the Nikwax wash and waterproofing for years. Never had that problem.J

never found them to be any good really. Didn't help in making the garment water resistant..

Never seen that happen with Nik wax or Granger's , I wash with granny's liquid soap , detergent buggers gortex , but it wouldn't cause that phenomenon.IMG20240318110152.webp

Yup. Just checked. My mistake.

I read the goretex website, which said detergent was ok. Then failed to read the instructions on the Nikwax bottle properly.

This seems to be (as usual) a disaster of my own making.

Question now is whether it can be fixed.

I use their TECHWASH first and then wash again in their reproofer. Never had a problem.
And if I tell you I’m a motorcyclist both private and professional, and some Rukka kit I’ve had for nearly 20 years treated with Nikwax after every winter - it’s still wearable and mostly waterproof.

I’d wash it with very gentle liquid soap and then try again. Can’t do any more harm can it now.

As @Rutland lad says, it is TechWash that is the cleaning product.

And I thought it was the Spray On variant of TX Direct that was for the laminated fabrics such as GoreTex?

"Easy to use spray-on waterproofing for all breathable waterproof clothing with wicking liners"

I moved away from GoreTex as I usually ended up sweating too much (did a lot of cycling previously) and just didn't find it breathable enough for my usage.

Well, I l’ll give it a go with the tech wash and see what happens.
