Before you get rid of what is clearly a very smart turnout, has your wife considered having some specialist trailer towing lessons?
A friend of mine (also North Wales based) provides such training. He's a very good teacher. Taught all my kids. I would recommend. It would really give her confidence.

A pickup and trailer combination is much more versatile than a van.

Agreed, sold my horse trailer & purchased a 3.5t box for my daughter to drive then they changed the law and she could have towed the trailer anyway. 3.5t box I bought turned into a real money pit but I eventually got it right - just before she retired the horse!!

Problem is, a lot of these boxes are converted from cheap ex working vans and unless you spend a small fortune you are likely to be buying someone elses problem.

Thanks for the advice .

I am good friend with a guy that converts large horse wagons .
Our plan is to buy the best bare van we can then convert it to a horse box, he has all the equipment and materials to turn it into a box.

Will see how it pans out tho .
Thanks again.

Thanks Vss

I also think part of it is to have a small area to sleep in if they go away .
We are lucky we didn’t sell her car , as she will just go back to an estate car .

Remember weight .
Everything thing in that vehicle is included in your 3.5 ton. Even your Mrs and daughter. food saddle and water etc.
Seen it to often at the stables I used to keep ponies at.

My Mrs is on a diet now 😂
The guy local that converts wagons has said the same to.
Hopefully we can get it all sorted and in weight .

My daughter has a pony on loan and I run an Ifor Williams horse trailer to get it to shows and competitions.
The ponies owner runs a 7.5 ton lorry for it and the larger horse she owns.
The lorry costs them an absolute fortune to keep on the road.
Every MOT / plating seems to cost them thousands of pounds, never mind additional repairs for things that go wrong with it.
I much prefer the simplicity of the horse trailer. No MOT’s or tax to worry about and any servicing costs are generally much more reasonable.

Yep I’ve tried to say these points to her,
But she’s adamant she’s wants a 3.5t van.
She will have to watch the weight as pointed out . Shes doing plenty of research at the moment ,
As I’ve said no way am I driving around the country again if she changes her mind again 🫣

3.5t boxes nearly always run overweight and are bloody expensive for a decent one, 7.5t lorries are again always overweight, I heard of an Oakley that was over 8t empty! The Ives Daily based 4-7t are great, we have a Freddie Gover 7.2t with a pushout side, has a load capacity of just under 2t and is cheaper to run than a Discovery towing.

shame to sell the hilux and trailer. they look mint. Id be feeling like shooting the horse or trading the wife in before parting with that hilux
