Partners to be quizzed in new gun licence screening

An acquaintance was mid divorce and rowing about money with his wife on the phone - he said something like "well in that case I might as well kill myself then", police arrived within half an hour, took guns, revoked licence, on her word.

Well she obviously cared about him enough to want to prevent that, divorce notwithstanding.

My mate just done his a few weeks ago his had one 50 years flo just asked his wife her date of birth TVP
That would be because only 3 forces are actually using the questionnaire. Gwent which developed it, the Met and BCH (my force) who are trialling it.
This only started last year, and partners are interviewed in private. You've not been paying attention.:);)

I said to an FEO a year or so ago, "you do all sorts of checks, except the obvious ones such as 'is there anyone living in the house who is violent, or has a mental illness?'. The people living with someone are probably the people who can tell most whether someone is a danger yet you never speak to them." His answer was, "We do check everyone in the household", apparently without speaking to them so not sure how that works, but he assured me checks are made, of who is there and whether they have any history.
Oh come on, don't be naive. They check their Intelligence database. They are also checking you, and the other occupants, for known associates who may not be boy scouts.

It’s been going on for ages here. Perhaps 3 renewals ago they even asked to speak to our Czech cleaner who happened to be at the house that day. Not a problem as she used to trial gundogs.

Obviously the way to prevent domestic homicides is to ban multi person households, nothing to do with legally held firearms at all

Was she happy having guns in the house , do I drink a lot etc
Essex police asked my mates wife the same question and she answered “I don’t like guns as they are dangerous” to which the officer replied “so are all the knifes in the kitchen that can be accessed quicker than a safe” 😂

I have had this ! Dont mind seems a good idea to me ! However this was many years in before the first and only one . I think everyone in the house is searched and this has gone on from the mid eighties when i first got granted i was living with a parent and my slightly older brother was serving time at that stage .

This report is also fascinating (linked from the previous article in question).

Some people don't seem to understand the system in place, and just because they may not understand the system, they want to change it to something that they feel more comfortable wi

Hi

I understood from the BBC report that it was bing 'trialed' by several other Polis Services - cant remember this being raised in Forum?

A refusal of an application for not completing a non-statutory/legal form seems to make for an interesting appeal......

What do our representative Organisations have to say now that tis out the bag? Did they know before the BBC report and if any, what action taken or entered into ddiscussion/communications before trials?

L
Here is a thing , its been done routinely for many years ! You might not not know or your force or individual FEO might not bother but its done pretty routinely .

The vast majority of stabbings are with kitchen knives . All these zombie knives, manchette and such ? Drug gangs fighting over territory , it doesn't matter one bit to them that an item is banned so are drugs and pistols and yet they still have them and always will i guess ?

When I applied for my first FAC (I had my FAC a year or more plus before I had my SGC) in 1976 the village RBO came and did the interview. A "residential beat officer" lived in a police house with his wife. He was PC414 Derek Downham. A WWII veteran and even today is part of the village...when he died in 2010 he was buried not five minutes walk from where I live in the parish graveyard. They are a rare thing nowadays done away with by Thatcher and later the useless Blair Home Secretary's Blunkett's "plastic policemen. Anyway at that time I was just nineteen and my mother held a FAC in her own right and my father an SGC. So it was all a different world. Some things were better, some not. Just different. But, mostly, just simpler.

All you need now is some vindictive partner and then what recourse do you have to get your certificates and firearms back?
Standard procedure here also is for the partner to "allege"
Firearms licensing is a very low priority on the agenda of every police force, and one they'd probably prefer not to worry about at all, but I really don't think that translates into opposition to firearms ownership.
It does imo, the Force(s) work on the principle of less firearms in the community = less risk...to themselves.

Its not uncommon for some people to make up lies and cause issues when a divorce is going on, and it would not be the first I have heard of a partner making false claims against someone who owns a firearm.
Aint that the truth.
What if the applicant had several mistresses? Would the firearms licensing dept have to track them all down and interview them?
They be busy in some cases lol.
Anyone want to purchase the site, give me a break???
Emma Chissett?
why do they insist on calling it a license it's a certificate, correct wording and all
It would be licence
When I moved to this house over 12 years ago the FEO came to the house to do his checks .After he left he phoned my wife to ask if our marriage was ok.
Try to set up a date?
Simplest answer: Choose your partner wisely!
Yep, head off to the gun club and choose. Criteria? Nice T+A, good cook, loves a shag and can shoot like a SAS trooper.
A spiteful spouse could end your hobbies or indeed employment with a phone call or brief chat.
As illustrated many times here also. There is the lets say carpenter that has a plethora of potentially life threatening tools...from chisels to chainsaws, from hammers to nail guns....oops did I say guns?
Does your partner have an interest with[sic] weapons...
Depends on its size.
police arrived within half an hour, took guns, revoked licence, on her word.
That`s a part that is so wrong, that they do the judge and jury immediately.
it doesn't matter one bit to them that an item is banned so are drugs and pistols and yet they still have them and always will i guess ?
When the NON gun owner is reported to be suicidal do they come along with a plumber and rip the gas stove from the wall or take the car keys?
Does a delicenced person in the UK have access to nail guns after the licence is revoked?
Does one need a licence to buy a nail gun in the UK?
What is in place in stopping some lunatic walking into the pub with a Paslode and sinking a magnum 3" nail into the scone of the **** that offended him/her? Or the latest in SS Wiltshire knives? How many house bricks have killed people?
The list is exhaustive.
