Identify deer using scope

If you have been unable to identify the deer as a shootable beast with binos spotting scope or mk1 eyeball then you
have not been able to identify the surrounding area as safe and you could be pointing a rifle at or in the vicinity of
domestic livestock, photographers, ramblers, twitchers or a courting couple.
Unlikely maybe! impossible definitely not read my earlier post of the photographer with the brown bobble hat.

my understanding of this post is that the op has looked through his bins he has assessed the situation the backstop is good he’s 99% sure of the deer sex and wants to confirm this with the scope before he takes the shot. Right?

If he needs to confirm it he is not SURE! Thats what bino's are for.

the OP pointed out he uses a 6X scope, and asked if a higher/variable scope with higher mag than his binos would be beneficial for final decision making, at no point did he mention scanning the horizon with a loaded rifle, I believe that was added by later posters, as to safely assessing backstop, he has covered that as well in his initial post, it would be helpful if folk would answer the question asked rather than rambling off on their own :p

Not wanting to go off on a ramble, but, after the deer has been located with binos and or thermal means, and the potential danger area has been examined thru the binos, I would be comfortable in further examination of the intended thru the scope, if the scope had a lot more mag capability than the binos, purely for the pleasure of watching the beast, anything else is outside generally accepted good practice.

Your technique on using sticks and bino is spot on
I use swaro’s 10 x 42 the same way and nothing gets past them, the depth of view on those are fantastic for a accurate close up snd clear view
10 x can give a picture wobble in high wind but using your sticks eliminates that problem

I wonder what the OP ended up doing in terms of scope back in 2020? We never hear the end of the stories 😂

Decent binos and a working scope
For years I used S&B 8x56 L7 or A4 ret on Roe in scotland couldn’t fault it as a good all round scope

Out with a mate on Roe when up there and we are in the high seat me with a pair of binos ex army type with brass fittings ( you know the ones) spied a Roe give him the nudge and said I’ll wait for it to come out more
His binos were up and he said get ready there’s 4 there 2 I can shoot already. He then gave me his binos swaro’s 10x 56 and I was gobsmacked at the clear view, sharpness and best of all you see through the trees and bushes just by gently re focusing
That very morning into inverness and I went out that afternoon with the 10x 42 version of the just launched all rubber coated new swaro’s And that was many. Many years ago and as I write, them very same binos are on the table beside me in the conservatory watching the goldfinches on their nest

From memory I think they were £600 without the swaro carry bag - best things I’ve ever purchased for all wildlife spotting / watching

I did however arrive home very or somewhat anxious and crest fallen knowing I would have to
Come up with a bombproof reason I blew £600 on such a tiny box 😂😂😂

Good binos are the key to success, you’ve got to find them first doesn’t whether it’s a muntie or a moose find it ID it and if safe to do shoot it
A short while after I managed to scrape enough together for a 8x56 #4 entry level swaro scope
Now 308 1.5 - 8 x 24 swaro S&B zenith FD7 2.5-10 x 56 on the 6.5 and a zeiss V8 with working ASV on the .243 very rare if any go above 8x the ASV on the .243 is superb and has never needed adjustment

3 different scopes for 3 different calibres which all work perfectly

Same quality binos suits all.
