Recommend me an air rifle

Hello All,
I’m after a .177 pcp Air Rifle for use in the garden. I’d like it to be a nice accurate bit of kit out to 50 yards and preferably a carbine with moderator (and as cheap as possible - sub £300 which I know is cheap). I’m still regretting selling my fx cyclone 10 years ago. Would happily add my 243 Parker hale (see classifieds) if this could be factored in to a sale).

Either an entry level new one or used. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Nothing to offer I'm afraid but I'd be really interested to hear the responses something for squirrels, magpies etc in the garden!

I've had an S200T for years, my son learnt to shoot with it, tin cans at 80m with it. The local rifle range sold it to us, it looks ugly but the barrel is a CZ target barrel ISTR, not sure you're find one sub £300 though

AirgunforumUK has a nice BSA Ultra tactical .177 with a little scope for £350 in the Classifieds, these are decent, I have one from new, happy to shoot live quarry at 50 yards with it.
Could you possibly send me a link please? I can’t find the classifieds at all. Thanks much appreciated

Hello @mikeakc , that forum has some strange rules regarding the Classifieds/sales section because of people joining it just to buy & sell without contributing to the forum in any other way.
I think you need to have joined and posted 50 meaningful posts to get access to the "Sales" section.
I'm useless at links from this Chromebook .. sorry!

I'm sure someone will provide a link to it, plenty of folks on both..

I have an absolute minter FEINWERKBAU-SPORT 124 cal 177. with slings, an A.S.I 4X32 scope. Also an as new Bradey bag worth £100. Originally all bought as a complete out fit and only used in the garden a couple of times then shelved as the owner travelled a broad a lot then recently passed away. The scope covers and foresight were miss placed.
As is a common problem with the original piston seals on these rifles they just rot away as happened to this fine example, TW Chambers to the rescue! a complete, NEW' kit has been installed, the old spring kept with the gun for those that may like to keep it. £500
These are now considered a collectors piece and sought after widely.
PS, the power is very' impressive and below 12 ft lb, accuracy is as you would expect from this maker very tight groups.

BC.

Thank you, but I’m after a PCP really. Cheers anyway.

For the money you cannot beat a Stoeger pcp XM1. I bought one for one of my grandsons to use in my garden in 177. To say i am impressed is an understatement, 11.94ftlbs with mosquito pellets and deadly accurate. It comes with everything you need in the box including scope and two magazines. I have started using it myself controlling pests in the garden accounting for five squirrels and several magpies in the last two weeks.

Your choice, but I'd be having that 'turned down' a bit by someone who knows what they are doing. Running at 11.94tf/lbs with Mosquitos (very light pellets IIRC) will mean that the rifle will almost definitely be running at over 12ft/lbs if fed with anything heavier. It only has to be 'capable' of exceeding 12ft/lbs to become a firearm in law ;)

I would always suggest a Weirauch as I have never shot a bad one…currently have a HW 100k (not for sale btw…haha).
I know they are not PCP but a used 95K or even a tatty 97K might work for your budget? Both would serve you well and are built like tanks!

How close are you to Ian Hodge? He has a couple of rifles that may work for you.

First is a Stoeger XM1. This is essentially made by a Chinese company called SMK, that are big in the entry level PCP market. The action is a PR900 one, and is used by several manufacturers and just rebranded.

Easy to work on, regulated and comes with a scope and moderator.

Second one is the Gamo GX-40/Phox/Coyote range of rifles. Same BSA made action and cold hammer forged barrel across all 3. Think the GX-40 has the carbine stock. Non-regulated, bolt action uses a BSA made magazine. Bit agricultural, but generally well screwed together.

Both rifles are sub 12 and will do a job at up to 40 yards.

Headshooting squirrels at 50 is a very big ask for any sub 12 though, and more FAC air territory. Personally wouldn't see that as suitable for anything sub-12.
