Unable to respond to farmers request for pest control

Got a call from a farmer yesterday asking me to deal with corvids on his crops which are being ravaged by carrions rooks and jackdaws. It was a difficult conversation (as crow shooting has been one of my favourite pastimes)but due to the ridiculous laws passed by the Welsh Government all these species are now protected by law.Carrions can be shot at certain times of the year but not for crop protection. It really was difficult to turn down the invitation,to do some good and help the countryside get rid of some of these predators but with so many busybody’s and anti’s about I had to explain that I could not comply with the request as to do so would/could jeopardise my SG/FAC.Another ill judged legislation to add to many from the clowns in Cardiff Bay.

You could have shot the jackdaws for crop protection under GL 001, and if the crops were being grown for livestock feed (which of course they were 😉) you could have shot the carrion crows as well.

When the veggies/vegans start to starve or they realise that bringing a bunch of asparagus or an avacado half way round the world is really not good for the environment, then perhaps they'll change legislation again.

They have not got to be physically attacking something at that moment
Its like shooting pigeon over stubble - do it

Read the restrictions, read the rules and stay within the terms and conditions, then both you and the landowner will need to be prepared to stand your ground when challenged.

Obviously not 100% on situation in Wales but here in Scotland just because control is not covered under General License doesn’t mean permission won’t be granted under individual license? Surely the land owner can still apply to Natural Resource Wales for prevention of severe damage?

Thanks for the responses and suggestion some of which may jeopardise my Certificates. If there is a loophole and legal then hopefully BASC will know so I intend to investigate further with them.Should there be anything positive to emerge I will post again on this matter.

Hi Richard
I feel you are worrying too much
Why not just make a quick call in the morning to BASC to quell any fears

I agree with Chris, that was uncalled-for (and not like you) Smelly.
I apologise to all offended.
At the time I felt (possibly wrongly) I was being told I or others were jeopardising his certs.
Nothing could be further than the truth!
I also have a short coming to being patient to folk being **** scared about them we pay our fecking taxes to so they can fecking live in luxury and generally fluk everything up.
My apologies, its the lead poisoning getting to me....
