What do people think of the hornady eldx?

I use 143gr eldx in 6.5Creedmoor.

Both factory ammo (at 2550fps) home loaded (at 2740fps).

I’ve found it very accurate.

It kills very well, and I’ve shot roe, red, fallow and sika with it, out to 380m. With the faster loading, it can be a bit damaging at short range, especially if it hits bone. But it expands well out to long range.

There are people who hate it and say either that it is too explosive and doesn’t penetrate, or that it pencils through, or that it veers off in weird directions making a mess of the carcass. I’ve shot around 300 deer with it, and none have had bad outcomes that weren’t the result of bad shooting by me.

I find it very accurate and with great stopping effect in .243 on roe, 90gr out of 1:8 twist, <¾ @ 200yds.

I used them in factory format only for the 6.5 CM and couldn't get on with them, don't get me wrong they were accurate but the damage to roe was more than i was looking for, it certainly made a fair mess of a few which made me think they were similar to the SST's. A mate of mine uses them exclusively and swears by them. I moved to home loaded 130gr Sierra Game Changers which so far have been brilliant.

Thanks everyone, they look to be worth a go.
Can’t decide weather to stick with lead free in the 6.5 or go back to lead for night culling.

used in the 6.5 CR with contrasting effects, in my country I hunt both wild boars and roe deer and fallow deer, with the former unless they are young and tender animals only non-recoverable injuries are caused, however for deer if not made to travel quickly everything ok These are my experiences

there can be accuracy issues in swapping back and forth one of mine does not but the others does not . I am not a great fan of ELDX and other cup and core basic bullets on game i much prefer the controlled expansion like tTSX copper or Nosler with their partition personally . Developed from a match bullet they shoot pretty good though heavy for calibre means means more recoil , which is fine shot prone with a heavy rifle but not so great off improvised and even free hand and a lighter sporting rifle at quarry inside regular hunting distances.
In night culling - you dont need BC anyhow because the range should be a lot closer and faster you can be onto the next beast the better

Have you done any night culling ?

Yes ! first decades ago way before it became simple and almost the norm, last maybe as much 2 years back ? when it first became a norm and on the Scottish register . Level 2 qual over 20 years . Are you looking for some doing or just being argumentative ? Its too common on here at present

Just a question, as I almost inevitably find my ranges are much further at night. And the last thing I’d want when tramping over the downs is a heavy rifle.
I do find bc important as it’s what makes my digi scope with ballistic calculation so good. It’s pretty common to shoot out to 350m at night in large arable fields. Without it I’d be stumped.

Am sorry but this is a old wives tale that needs to be euthanised

Its utter horse****

The jackets of lead cup and core bullets that come into contact with the rifling ARE the same material as the vast majority of non lead bullets
The exception being brass solids

I have spent the last 10+ years reaearching, developing and producing non lead ammo specifically to work in factory rifles
All of the rifles which are used in development are well used rifles, seldom cleaned and certainly never cleaned between change of ammo

If your rifle doesnt shoot lead or non lead after shooting the opposite one then the rifle is faulty
That is NOT the norm for lead vs non lead

I regularly switch between the two in testing in my own rifles and of the 17 other cartridges and numerous wildcat cartridges we develop custom ammo for I NEVER clean them before testing and development

They (non lead) dont require any special cleaning regime or routine
If your rifle doesn’t shoot without cleaning it before after or during changing ANY ammo it has a problem specific to that rifle

Its not a thing
Stop perpetuating issues that don’t exist

OP
ELD-X are excellent bullets
I use them exclusively in my 300NM and have shot game at everything from 50-450m with excellent results

I didn’t like the carcase damage on small game using the 6.5-284 (143gr at circa 3150) but the sample size was small
Other rave about them

Proven to be very accurate and very expansive even at range with excellent killing characteristics

Completely agree, regularly swap between nosler bt, hornady cx, fox 123 and Barnes ttsx in my swede. I rarely clean the rifle, it’s done about 2500 rounds now and tbh the last thing I want to do when I finish work early in the morning is clean it. It shoots all of these into well under an inch group and I’ll literally change between them a few nights a week depending on what I’ve got on. Same in the .243, same in the 06 and .222 too.

I'm using the factory 145gr edlx in my 270. Only used them on roe so far (and a fox ) they have been very accurate and always had an exit hole and woulnt say the meat damage as been over excessive either. I've shot targets out to 500m so far and very impressed. I won't be In a rush to change them any time soon.
