Camo or gentleman stalker ?

Tweed, or rather a bespoke woven estate tweed, is cammo. When Haggart's was still a proper tailoring concern you could look at the tweed pattern books. Some tweed was a dark dark brown. A pest colour in fact. Or that of rank heather. Some tweed was near blue like the French WWI 'Horizon Blue' or others a slate or shale grey blue like modern US Navy cammo. On some estates with lots of exposed rocks and boulders or limestone pavement and such the tweed was a nearly a light grey. Green as in grass green or olive green tweed almost seemed a rarity.

When I had my shooting suit made by them I chose a tweed that most resembled American "Marsh Grass" cammo as by coincidence the estate in Scotland where I then shot and my own pond in Leicestershire was that yellow "gone over" grass and dry reed.. So I asked Haggart's to see what tweed they had nearest to this American "Marsh Grass" cammo. So my shooting suit is almost a yellow ochre hue.

So in reality tweed is cammo. That Jack Pike, Keeper's Tweed and etc., etc. is green or olive green doesn't mean it would actually be a practical stalking tweed on many estates. For the latest scheme of today's British Army cammo would be more practical.

HOWEVER WHAT BETRAYS YOU MOST IS NOT LACK OF CAMMO OR LACK OF MATCHING BESPOKE ESTATE TWEED IT IS LACKING OF BLOOMIN' WELL KEEPING STILL AND KEEPING QUIET! ESPECIALLY THE FIRST IF YOU MAKE SUDDEN MOVEMENT.

In that respect learn from those times you go shooting grey squirrels. The squirrel that doesn't move is hard to spot. But as soon as he moves he's dead (if you can hit him). How many of us have stood stock still waiting for that tell tale peep of the squirrel's head around the tree trunk and then "bang" goes your gun.
Finally someone has said it, I was just about to type the same thing about tweed but thought it worth a look to see if someone else had mentioned it

TBH I was all about cammo than decided I looked like a tw@t in tescos then recently realised you still look like a tw@t in other stalking attire tweeds and loden included. Perhaps it's me, but I mostly look like a tw@t whatever I wear....
Anyway there is plenty of good ex military cold and wet weather camo and summer stuff too and it all does work in improving your chances there is no doubt about that... Nowadays I have accepted I look like at tw@t anyway so it really doesn't bother me what the tesco massive think ....

Just a mixture of dark green and brown clothing for the most part. Only camo items I have these days are my gloves which are flecktarn and an old Jack Pyke jacket that very rarely get used when the other jackets aren't quite right for the temps.

shot plenty while wearing a nuclear/chemical/biological protection suit
Had an NBC suit when I was in my early teens, was my winter rabbiting outfit, toasty :D

You are not alone....but of course standing in a gun line all similarly attired and therefore hiding in plain sight at least it's not so immediately obvious.

Loden jacket, brimmed hat and Harkila strides.
Strange, some of wouldn’t dream of going shooting improperly attired, but you have no problem going stalking dressed like a Balkan war era militia man?
I was "asked" to wear shirt and tie on beaters day to look smart!
Took Chip through after all the "smart dressed" beaters had finished with their dogs and declared nothing else.
Chip and his non tie wearing owner picked 5 more (3 runners) at the time it was £30.00 a bird so £150.00 on the bill lol

Summer - old DPM smocks pillaged from father's reservist kit, dark stalking trousers (percussion), moosh-mask & gloves
Winter - Boreal wool smock The Rough© Anorak | Boreal Mountain Anoraks dark trousers, moosh-mask & gloves. Swanni Bush Shirt if it is too warm for the Boreal.
DPM Smock is brilliant because it has excellent pockets is tough and well made, the Boreal is a world beater with an enormous pouch for kit, warm and doesn't go darker when wet. Swanni would be better with a decent pouch pocket.
I think pink faces and pink hands moving are a real give-away. The moment you look up at a pigeon they veer off, can't see that deer would be any different.

I've shot my fair share of trophy deer.
I wasn't doubting your ability pete6.5 but would ask, how many of those whilst wearing hi vis and are they shot using the walk up stalking method in daylight. 300 a year after coming home from your job does suggest that they are after dark deer.
two weeks wearing a site hi vis jacket for a laugh.
We can all do that i`m sure but doing so doesn't make good practice for stalking deer in daylight and on foot.
When it comes to a comparison of what`s best I will stick to the cam. Fallow deer in the hills have eyes like bloody hawks and will spot reflective Vis bands from a k away easily. Stalking in close to other species is even tougher. But it can be done of course there is no denying that.

I foot stalk nearly all my deer it would be in the 90 percents

Only if thats how you want to take it.
I think its fair comment on the dual standards applied to those of us partaking in the shooting sports.
Its doesn't apply to me as I haven't worn any military cams for over 40 years.

Exactly.

In daylight? If so how do you fit it in after work, dealing with 300 takes time.

I only shoot 250-300 a year and I often only wear what I come home wearing as a heating engineer. I've shot my fair share of trophy deer.
That’s a lot of deer if it’s not your job. What species? Reds and roe and you’ll be a very busy boy!!

To fit it in I have to be very efficient and main bulk of the ground is very local to me.

whatever I fancy putting on dependant on the land and the weather....I have plenty of varieties of cammo (most being freebies from mates/family still serving) German army shirt, green shirts, green trousers..... as per old school army teaching.... shape shine shadow, silhouette, spacing movement sound. is more important than the kit you wear as not much stalking (of Deer) done on a catwalk

On a side note John gryphon you live in a beautiful part of the world and I was lucky to be able to visit and travel regularly in the 90s. I just need to persuade my missus to go to Australia but she's not a fan of travelling. I love northern WA and into the northern territories.
