Hi to all,

New to rifle shooting, game shooting a plenty. I'm living in the north west and I've had an FAC for about 6mths(novice, mentor). My mentor is happy that I'm safe in the use of my two rifles, but a firearms officer at the Northern shooting show stated that I'd have to shoot six deer before they'd consider removing the 'mentor' part of my FAC. This seems ludicrous to me, bearing in mind I might want to start shooting deer in year 2, 3 or 5 of the FAC? Is this a local police force quirk, or do I need to get BASC involved? Any thoughts and guidance much appreciated before I 'lawyer up'. Thanks in advance. Bren.

Welcome!
Mentoring conditions can usually be removed by your mentor writing a letter to the licensing department that issued your FAC, stating that they are of the opinion that you are sufficiently safe and experienced to no longer need mentoring.
Or just go and shoot six deer. Might be quicker and easier!

Where are you based in the north west?

if you shot 6 deer you would be all good eh ? Its stupid and proves nothing at all other than a full freezer and the cost of the stalking but i question why you want an open ticket so bad and soon ( closed ticket should not limit where you go shooting other than you likely need to go with a guide or better a mix of different guides ) Take a picture with you and those deer one at a time or all together because that's all he said right ? Job done ! Utterly proves nothing other than you Probebly shot them. I dont see how that validates an open ticket in any way personally but if that's been said i should copy the exchange ( you could do that easy culling some dumb park deer penned in )
There are people on here in the NW who could set that day up at a price , though i will let them come into this themselves if they are ok to take your cash on it . Can you not do it where you shot the first though ?

Thanks for the reply Bowland. It does seem a bit of an unusual stipulation. I do intend to do the DSC1 or the online course, the PDS1. Any thoughts on these courses?

Oh, just to clarify. Not trying to get an open ticket at this extremely early stage of my FAC, just want to lose the 'mentor' bit. That's all. Then I can shoot anywhere with permission without having to drag my lovely mate along every single time. Just a touch more flexibility.

While I'd agree the cost for pds1 does seem like the intention is money making. It's worth calling out that it is also a recognised course amongst colleges or unis I believe, as a friend has to do it as part of a wildlife managment degree
