New to the forum

While I'd agree the cost for pds1 does seem like the intention is money making. It's worth calling out that it is also a recognised course amongst colleges or unis I believe, as a friend has to do it as part of a wildlife managment degree
Interesting. Myerscough agricultural college is nearby, might be worth a look. Thanks for the heads up.👍

Hi to all,

New to rifle shooting, game shooting a plenty. I'm living in the north west and I've had an FAC for about 6mths(novice, mentor). My mentor is happy that I'm safe in the use of my two rifles, but a firearms officer at the Northern shooting show stated that I'd have to shoot six deer before they'd consider removing the 'mentor' part of my FAC. This seems ludicrous to me, bearing in mind I might want to start shooting deer in year 2, 3 or 5 of the FAC? Is this a local police force quirk, or do I need to get BASC involved? Any thoughts and guidance much appreciated before I 'lawyer up'. Thanks in advance. Bren.
Was the firearms officer, your enquires officer? because it's their opinion that matters.

I've found they're a very mixed bunch. I was in a similar boat to you a few years back and my FEO was a very sensible straight talking chap who said basically get a DSC1 and get out with your mentor as much as possible and it makes his life easier to give me more. I got my DSC1, bagged a few deer for myself and went with my mentor as he bagged some (this counted for something) and when it came around for approval I got an open ticket for a .308.

Maybe I was just lucky, as one hears horror stories, but I do believe if you show you're keen and take it seriously they'll have less reason to hold you back!

Thanks for the quick reply. I think he was our new FEO. I'm not looking for an open ticket though, just want to get rid of the 'mentor' bit of my closed ticket.

Personally I think take your mentor out learn some stuff in 6 months you should be able to shoot your 6 deer or less. Do your dsc1 too. Take your time enjoy learn and have fun. It’s not a big deal your anxiety to have conditions removed worries me! It’s all a journey enjoy it.

Please don't worry. I've spent the last 28yrs of my life saving lives and doing no harm. Zero anxiety too, see previous sentence. Always happy to learn, every day's a learning day etc. DSC1 Is a definite. Removing the mentor aspect is just to allow flexible, responsive action for several permissions I've access to, that's all.

All I’m saying mate is don’t try and run before you can walk. I’m presuming you have a mentor condition because you have little experience of CF rifles. So it seems to me get some experience and then just apply to have it removed. It’s really simple. It doesn’t matter what your previous jobs were that’s irrelevant if it wasn’t the feo would have taken it into account, as it is they don’t even take a military background as a sign of competent safe gun handling.

Yep. Absolutely not trying to run before I can walk, never have done. The other stuff was to placate your 'anxieties' not the FEO. Difficult on a forum. Thanks for your help though, will see how things progress.

Once doe’s are in season you should be able to get 6 roe in a couple of days three at most in my experience!
