The enthusiasm of youth

Whilst up stalking and fishing on the north coast (Kyle of Tongue, Skerray, Bettyhill) I charted a small boat for the boys. It cost just £40 each for a four/five hour trip and between the three of them they caught 131 fish. It was great: Ling, Spurdog, Dogfish, Gurnard, Whiting, Coalie, Plaice, Mackerel, Cod and lots of Haddock. No Pollock this year, the boys were too happy with the deep species for me to troll. The skipper, Davey, is one of the genuinely nicest people you could ever meet. He is lovely with the boys, it is our fourth year out with him, he seemed to be enjoying it as much as the boys and took out a rod to catch a further 50. Just shy of two hundred fish. We returned 40 undersized fish and Davey kept his own.

It was long hard work to process them but my eldest was pleased with his now honed knife skills. The youngest still has some way to go but was brilliant on the vacuum packer. My middle son had the best stamina and commitment. Very proud of their effort. The meat is roe, I will do a separate write up for my stalks etc.

They love every part of it, I was amazed with the filleting. There were so many haddock to go at that making mistakes didn’t matter at all. They started to get the hang of it but I was able to use my ‘don’t worry, there’s plenty more fish in the fridge’ joke on multiple occasions.

Great day out for the lucky young lads there, looks like Steve Cartridge won't be getting any business from you for quite some time.

Nice enjoyable read and write up walked up 👍

Best days out with your family, memories last for years, we used to go wrecking off the Varne with the Coker family boat out of Folkestone, we had some glorious days out and one or two er umm bumpy days throw or rather up for some who didn’t heed the advise about going in the greasy spoon before the day started 🤣🤣
Jim Coker knew the varne especially good on the cod using pirks and flattie bashing fantastic fishing

We used to get some decent bags, kept the freezer looking good 👍🏻and a good day had by all

lovely, miss my dad every day as did all that 50 plus years ago.
Exactly the same here, I fished with my Dad for 50 years on his boats but it sadly came to an end this year, Them memories will stick with the kids forever, Nice to see so many Haddock as well, They're quite rare down here in the NE of England

He took me to Ireland SW at 11, we went for 2 weeks caught a blue shark lots of skate 145/90 lbs the biggest
big pollock 3 of the smaller skate. Dads B shark was the first on recorded for that area by a fisherman got him a EFSA award.

We stayed at a boarding house (1972) and fast fwd to 2004 I taught a chap to dive with an Irish surname and he mentioned it to his Mother and that was her first cousin who ran the boarding house at the time lol

My dad never started a family until WW2 was over and he was retired, so I missed out on that sort of thing. Heard lots of stories about big congers and skate caught with handlines, and bags of netted mullet and bass. The catches he was most proud of was 200+ bass, each about 2lb caught in The Fleet behind Chesil Beach and the 26 Bass that he and his father and brother caught by a wreck within handline distance on the other side of the beach one night, all about 6-7lb.
I don't charge juniors and over-80s for fishing in my lakes.

Agree, love the intensity of youth. This is a pic of my son and his pal when they were 13.
My son literally wore a blister on his right hand from reeling in so many fish. Due to the heat and humidity (this was in the Gulf of Mexico) no bandage would stick and cover the blister. When told he would either have to tough it out or quit, he came up with a 3rd option and switched to a left handed reel so he could keep fishing. There was no quit in either of those boys.
