Around 3am today this happened. Amazingly there was nobody crossing it at the time. I am not religious but!!!!!

A bridge partially collapsed in the eastern German city of Dresden early this morning, rescue services said, adding that no one was injured. A roughly 100-metre section of the Carola Bridge, which connects Dresden's historic old town to other parts of the city, plunged into the Elbe river overnight, the Dresden fire brigade said. The entire area has been sealed off and no river traffic was possible, Dresden police said on social media platform X. Residents have been urged to stay away.
Rescue services were at the scene and were working on damage control to prevent further parts of the bridge from collapsing, fire brigade spokesman Michael Klahre told AFP.
The cause of the collapse was still unknown, he added.
The part of the bridge that fell down was the section dedicated to tram lines and foot traffic. The section for road vehicles was not affected.

The partial collapse also damaged two heating pipes, cutting off district heating in the area.

It seems to be quite an interesting bridge from a civil engineering point of view. Mainly Democratic Republican rather than Federal, of course. It did get widened not that long ago, and I wonder whether that's the bit that fell off?

Glad to see no-one was hurt and there were no trams or pedestrians on it at the time. I presume the structural engineers will be over it like a rash and checking all the others of a similar vintage for any potential catastrophic failures.
