BASC update - Liberal Democrat conference

Conor O'Gorman

Well-Known Member
Speaking at today's BASC and Angling Trust reception at the Liberal Democrat conference in Brighton, Brian Mathew MP welcomed the role of shooting in preserving the British Countryside. He said: "We all rejoice in nature, and we must all do our bit to make sure our countryside is protected."

Refreshing, especially as I voted for him!
It would really help if you could write to your MP to thank him for his efforts and going on record etc. And let everyone you know in the constituency about this and to follow suit with letters. Positive feedback from constituents goes a long way. Let's consider that antis may well send negative feedback in the post to the MP's office about this.

was it just this MP or was there a cross party agreement to support field sports @Conor O'Gorman. My MP is Lib Dem and a bit if an anti I might challenge him if that was the case,

I would take it as party support but MPs will have their own views also, albeit when it comes to voting on legislation they will be expected to support the party line - with the party manifesto being relevant.

Alistair Carmichael MP was also present and spoke of the need for building consensus with rural communities. Mr Carmichael is the newly appointed chair of the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Select Committee, and he told guests at the event that his party would be a significant rural voice in Westminster following the general election. See update below with more details.

EFRA committee chair calls for close engagement with BASC and rural communities

Do write to your MP about the event and what was stated by the LibDem speakers as that will help raise their awareness also. There are many events at the conferences.

Thank @Conor O'Gorman. He doesn’t seem to fit into this mould. I’ll speak to him and see what he says.

well i spoke to a lib dem candidate not so long ago, and she said the lib dems would ban all forms of shooting in the uk, i said well thats ok, because the lib dems will never form a goverment in the uk, she said their was to much gun crime in the uk on the streets.

You have to take LibDem candidates as you find them, for instance my local one advocates the total extermination of all the isle of wight's deer, how bizarre is that?

There is a big difference between what an individual might say and what party policy is. However, speaking with or writing to candidates or elected MPs about recreational shooting and dispelling myths is always a worthwhile endeavour I think.

Lib Dem policy motions

The Lib Dems use party conferences to pass policy motions, where members vote on motions that then become official party policy.

Autumn Conference Motions 2024

There was one on National Parks as follows:

In other words the usual crack pot ideals of the bourgeois middle classes!

@timbrayford I have not looked at the other motions but I think the following from the National Parks motion is ok from a shooting/conservation perspective?
  1. Everybody should be able to access a healthy environment; open green spaces, clean blue rivers and the beauty of Britain's coastlines.
  2. We need our protected landscapes to lead the restoration of our natural environment.
  3. Local authorities are key to unlocking the potential of protected landscapes for nature's recovery, including with community engagement.
  4. We must support farmers, who have a vital role in tackling climate change and the nature crisis, to ensure they can contribute to the restoration of the including woodland, heathland and moorland, particularly upland peat. This will support the recovery of natural flood protections, carbon storage and thriving ecosystems whilst also providing high-quality food for the table.
  5. Rights of Way must be recorded clearly to be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations.
What do you think?

60 million trees planted a year, classic warped middle class thinking! So where does the food come from? Simple, imports from overseas with lower environmental standards and/or more intensive agriculture, e.g. greater use of pesticides, and just how much tropical rain forest needs to be cleared too? Out of sight, out of mind.
I could go on about moorlands, heaths, agricultural crops and the like sequestering CO2 and the benefits of natural regeneration vs tree planting but all those middleclass do-gooders will have it their own way, no matter how much damage it does. Don't even start me on Airmiles Attenborough!

To which I'm sure you replied,
Would that be from legally held or illegally held firearms?
Jimmy.
