Returning to hgv

Looking for advice from any Hgv drivers, I passed my Hgv & drove till 2010 but a change in employment meant I didn’t need a Hgv. I’m looking to get back into driving again (cat c) According to the Gov website I only need to do the cpc training again to obtain my licence again. Is this correct because so much on the web contradicts itself

I used to do agency driving whilst in the forces and then after a gap of some 20 years I went back to it..... I am now basically retired and I drive through an agency 1-2 days a week.
It was with some trepidation that I went back..... I only have a class 2 so no artic work for me, but I had no hassle with the size of the wagon.
What I did notice was :-
so much more electronics in the vehicles. ( I passed my test in a military vehicle with a crash gearbox - if you do not know what that is, ask your dad). now most are auto with little buttons or switches instead of gearsticks.
all of the machine including inside the cab on camera
the attitude at firms was far better than it used to be towards the drivers (no more thought of, as the thief that had not been caught yet
very few 'agency's' for ad hoc hours , most are 'placement' agency or recruitment firms now only looking for full time staff

You have passed your test - no training required on that

Uou will, as others have said need to do 35 hrs cpc either as a block or in one day 7 hr sessions (many on line providers these days)

Once you’ve done that you will also need a digital tacho graph card (unfortunately no paper ones any longer 😂😂)

If you do return to working on the road - you’ll find pay has increased exponentially, vehicles are car like to drive and the advent of disc brakes makes stopping so much easier 😂

I understand agency work can be lucrative and also a nightmare so be careful who you work for

Hi,

You will need Cpc and digi tacho card then you're on the road. I did the same as you want to, cpc is mind numbingly boring tbh, but you need it.
Main difference now is the layout in the cabs, as said before nearly all buttons and switches, quite a lot have a screen for switching stuff on and off etc.
Good luck with re starting in hgv driving again.

I used to play some fine tunes on those boxes:rofl:

Rather you than me.

I’d take playing hopscotch in a minefield over driving an artic into London , any day of the week.
Many, Many moons ago I carted newsprint reels to Eddie Shah's effort on Isle of dogs ... absolute nightmare. .. And one trip through Elephant & Castle both wing mirrors were folded forward on the tractor unit.

I on occasion have to deliver tower crane parts when we are erecting one in London.

My stomach is in knots every time we go down …

I’ve flattened two lampposts , a 30 mph sign, and tore the side out of a van.

Funnily enough I haven’t been asked to drive Lorries again.

We used to deliver to News International at Wapping many many years ago - full trailer load (22 ton back then) of reels tipped in one hit using joloda trailers

Pulled that out of shotton paper if I recall correctly

Timed deliveries which you had to make 30 min window

Made for some interesting drives down south,,,,back in the day when it was relatively easy to make scanias go a lot faster than the speed limit and pre limiter days

Right of passage pal

Ever do Daily Mirror No4 hoist?
You had to scrape the corner of the cab to get a SedAk up there.

No Steve

My paper deliveries were to NI only

Though the unloading bays were the usual six inch wider than the trailer down the full length and darker than a night with no moon

Always a bastard to get in

No 4 was in the papers one day, Young fella decided he would de nail half of his chocks to speed things up, he moved off & turned hard left up onto the cobbled slope up to the hoist ................. reels came adrift & rolled back across the road into a taxi rank, Happy Bunnies they were not.
