First Wild Boar in Dean.

Hi All,

I just wanted to show my appreciation to @WarrenJB and Tim H who @quarrystalker I arranged a wild boar outing in the Forest of Dean. Despite an unsuccessful attempt last year with a different guide on a smaller piece of land, Warren and Tim, who manage a larger area, provided us with more options.

Our trip was scheduled a couple of months ago and on the morning of the shoot, @quarrystalker and I had an early range session booked to zero our night vision scopes. However, would you believe my key snapped in the lock of my cabinet. I called Warren, who generously offered the estate rifle, which I gladly accepted.

Upon arriving in Dean around 3:30 pm, with the temperature dropping to -4°C, Tim, our guide for the evening recognised the cold conditions and assured us we wouldn't be left freezing in high seats all night. After a few hours, Tim checked in, and although it was cold, I opted to stay in the seat a while longer. Around 8 pm, we decided to go on foot despite the near full moon working against us. Tim was determined to get us on a boar.

At around 10:45 pm, we spotted a boar. Quickly and quietly we stalked into position and after catching my breath for a few seconds to gain a steady hold, I cleanly dispatched the boar.

We walked back to get the truck and after returning to load up we headed for the larder. The boar was weighed and dressed by Tim ready for us to take home. Tim even offered to take @quarrystalker out again for another look but we was both happy with the one boar between us for the evening and agreed @quarrystalker would take the shot on a future visit.

I skinned the boar the following day and as Tim advised, you will need your knife sharpener! After skinning the boar it becomes quite evident why you can’t remove the hair from the animal like a pig, the hairs go really deep into the skin and fat.

The whole trip was great experience and another good memory to look back on in years to come. If you are looking for wild boar in the UK I would definitely recommend these guys. They are not miracle workers so expect to have to put some work in but it’s so much more rewarding when you have had to work for it.

Thank again Guys!

I have to echo .308 stalkers appraisal. Seems like wvery trip we book, ends up a cold one. It was great to watch the deer from a high seat & the Barn owls hunting the tracks in the woods. We got to see a lot of deer through Tims Thermal in the deer park too. I can’t begin to describe the excitement on seeing the Boar at the feeding station, & finally bagging one. We will definately return in the near future for my chance to bag one.

Well done for sticking it out and nice write up. Roughly where were you in the Forest? I’m in Mitcheldean and would love to take a boar one day. What calibre did you use and was there any nervousness at stalking them on foot? Sounds like quite an experience. I guess that’s Christmas Day gammon sorted!

Thanks for the kind words, i can’t remember the name of the village but it wasn’t far past Wollaston, I remember going past that sign.

There wasn’t any nervousness from me. I think, so long as you’re cautious and don’t rush in after the dispatch you are generally safe. The guide made me wait back for at least 5 minutes watching through the scope and we approached with care.

Certainly is ready for Christmas but I couldn’t wait so I’ve prepared lemon pepper chops for this evening. I know a local butcher who was kind enough to butcher is for me. I collected it a couple of hours ago.

I took my .308, but it was .308 stalker who took the shot with the estate rifle, due to an unforeseen circumstance. We were instructed to take a head shot & I believe it may of been a .223 ? but .308 stalker can clarify.

Did you do or get done the trichinella test? It is safe until someone gets ill from the worms. Good fun though, hope it was not a .223 used if it wasthen just asking for trouble ie a charging boar.

As long as you cook it quite well it's fine. I eat lots of boar and don't bother testing unless it's going to be eaten raw. (dry cured sausage)

Nice one and well done
I've not been out with Tim but I've met him a couple of times and he's a nice guy.
