Many thanks That’s what I’ve found too but I’m not relying on mine everyday, just the odd task, I have a boker tech tool which is good. He will need blade, saw, scissors, maybe pliers, screw driver etc…

If he needs saw, pliers, screwdriver for his work etc then he's going to need proper tools, not Christmas cracker sized items.
Perhaps a good basic toolkit in a decent carry case would be of more genuine use than a multitool?

Those knives are world legal as you can't open them with one hand, in the UK one handed opening isn't an issue. Personally for a UK legal EDC I'd go for the Byrd Tern. It's a subsidiary company of Spyderco and this knife is much lighter and slimmer profile, so more discreet and easier to carry everywhere.

I have the Leatherman Wave on my belt unless i'm in my posh clothing. It goes everywhere with me. Used it this morning setting up two boar feeders.
Plenty of models to choose from in the Leatherman range.

Leatherman Wave is a really good shout and can be made UK legal with a small washer kit that stops the blade locking. I've a lot but have yet had the heart to do it as I like the safety of locking.



In terms of a nice present for a working knife, I'm a big fan of the folding TBS Boar. Nice handles, nice leather belt pouch, and a quality UK made knife. It's a proper chunky work tool too, and will put up with abuse. It's UK legal as it folds, but it's got such a strong detent that it feels really safe.

Agreed its not the best toolkit you can possibly have….right up to the time when its the only toolkit you’ve got.

Surely, if you have good reason to have any locking blade, things like this are unnecessary

Trouble is, our legal system doesn't seem to like actual black & white boundaries. I don't like the idea of losing my fac or even years of my life, because someone didn't agree that my good reason was good enough

You've left work, and you've stopped in the local co-op and forgotten to take it off your belt? That or you've taken it off your belt and stuck it in your side door on your truck and it stays there when your missus drives it to the shops.

Both very plausible and explainable to plod, but all it takes is the wrong sort and you can be charged.

I'm sure my luck will run out one day, but I've had a Buck 110 lock knife on my belt all day, every day, for over 30 years. It goes everywhere with me: weddings, funerals, dinner parties, school functions, Christmas shopping, hotels, service stations, railway stations, police stations etc etc.
No-one has ever questioned it. It's even been on my belt when I've been introduced to Royalty and politicians.
I think a lot of people worry too much about what "might" happen, instead of just getting on with being who they are.

I think a lot of people worry too much about what "might" happen, instead of just getting on with being who they are.

Yep, I suppose it's also a geographical thing though. I'm East Sussex, but regularly spend time in London and outskirts. I have been working in London and been stop/searched at a tube station and had to explain away all my tools by proving what I did for a living.

Coupled with the fact that wherever I am, and whatever I'm doing, I still look (and smell) like a farmer.

Give him both, I carry a SAK and a leatherman when I'm away fishing or on the hill..... Mind you, I also carry my Eka as well on the hill for gralloching - overkill maybe, but being orange reduces the chances (slightly) of losing it!

I used to have a Victorinox key ring penknife, until I forgot and walked into the House of Commons where it was politely but convincingly taken from me

This is always my worry, sat on my belt, forget about it and some one gets upset…

I've got a decent selection of UK legal pen knives that I swap around and take out with me much in the same way someone with different watched would. Some are much more rigid when open than others or have better choils to stop the blade collapsing. Likewise some have shiny stainless pocket clips and others are more discreet in stonewashed black.

I like not having to worry about having the 'wrong' knife on me when I'm out and about as i spend quite a bit of time commuting to London and travelling for work.

Leatherman for me I carry it everywhere , I bought it for £6 at a car boot sale , was covered in paint and plaster !! So put in in a bath of thinners then ultrasonic cleaner and came out like new , brill tool for kit bags or in the car

Another vote for SAK that I have had for best part of 40 years. I thought I'd lost it but it's been in my pocket every day for the last 4 years since I found it. I also have 2 full-size Leatherman and a mini one. I prefer the SAK for everyday use...scissors and a corkscrew help, also smaller and lighter, an all round better pocket carry. Leatherman's are excellent too - just found one in my pocket as well, needed the pliers on Thursday, but I will use the SAK every day.!
