Cal specific mods Vs non

Wanting to swap my wildcat Evo. Not horrendous heavy but does tip weight a little front heavy. It'll be on 204 & the Evo is a .20 cal.

I'm liking the look (and weight) of F&D 149. But they don't come in a 20.

Will I really notice much of a difference using a non specific moderator?

I use a 6.5 on my 223.
Works fine for me. Would it be noticeably quieter being 223? Nah I don’t recall my prior 223 mod being much different.

For what it's worth I use a .30 cal moderator on my .17 rem and it works amazingly well, I'm not going to argue that a calibre specific mod reduces the muzzle blast better it makes sense, but I doubt you'd be able to detect much difference with your MK1 ears well I certainly can't.... 😂

If you get a 22 calibre one it should be fine.
My mate is using a jet z cqbs 22 calibre mod on his 204 and its fine.

I bought .30cal mods and used on both the .243/.270. both heavy but just get on with it.

What do you do for cleaning/maintenance mate?
Standby for incoming! I've posted on here before about gas-cutting on my F&D FW196 (same design but over the barrel) and maintenance. F&D offered me a good discount on a UTS231 - that one is not strippable so now, my maintenance regime on both mods is remove asap, leave at room temperature to dry, pull through repeated with appropriately sized bore snake and then a small spray of Napier SilenSave from both ends and store seperate. No noticeable pop on next use or discernable smoke. All mods IMHO are consumables and will eventually wear out/fail. The manufacturer cannot control number and speed of rounds fired after sale nor assure that full powder burn occurs in the barrel. I was grumpy that my FW196 failed when it did but pleased by F&D response. I feel that the FW149 has more than earned its keep and I'll probably replace with the same if it does fail. It is a stalking moderator though, not for target or heavy range use!

That brings me into my next question - would that exact point be valid reason for an additional mod on my ticket?
I actually have multiple mods for calibres and have consigned my Evo(s) principally to load dev work using an Ocean Defence Hunter Ti on my two .308s (or the UTS231) and the FW149 on the .243/.270. The FW149 is 149g, the OD is 169g and the UTS231 231g - the Evo is 440g in .243, .270 and .308! The case to the FLO was lightweight low-fire stalking use and high use range firing. Besides, having removed the heavy Harris-style bipod from the front sling stud and halved the mod weight at the end of the barrel, my 4 CF rifles are a delight to carry and swing now 🤗

The trick to making mods last is not go down the range Peter...more rounds to go out stalking...

I'm planning that 2025 is year i start reloading so I'd rather keep hold of Evo for that.

Also make sure you dry a moderator out after use. Even if its dry weather, the gasses released on firing contain water. I believe even aluminium or exotic metals benefit from this. I put them on a radiator or aga after use.

While you can certainly do some load development with no ill effect (like finding max loads), usually doing the development with 450g mod and then changing to 150g mod is not optimal.

True, but having got to the sweet spot, I switch to the stalking mod and have found only a few fps change and a slight change of POI - easily sorted.
