Peak 44 carbon stock (weatherby backcountry).

Evening all. I have the chance to buy a peak 44 carbon stock for my howa 1500 308 to replace the original hogue one. It's used but in perfect nick from a friend in the states. Around half price of a PSE.

These are the stocks for weatherby backcountry models and the reviews online are very positive especially with regards to recoil. Weight is 1.2lbs so a real featherweight.

My current set up weighs in around the 9lb mark fully loaded and I believe the hogue stocks are around 2.5lbs.

As I get older, I prefer longer stalks and often walk all day looking deer. A lighter set up would certainly be appreciated, although I don't want to sacrifice recoil abortion from the heavier rubber stock. I shoot 110gr copper with mod which is currently very recoil friendly.

Does anyone have first hand experience with the peak 44 or the weatherby backcountry?

Much appreciated

No such experience with this particular stock, but I do own a sako carbonlite which is on the low end of the scales. My whole setup with scope and mod is just over 7.5lbs. Id say go for it if the price is right and keep your bullet weight at the 110, you may feel an extra bit of recoil as you get onto the heavier projectiles.

Far more comfortable on my back when stalking, hardly noticeable. It is however slightly more difficult to shoot off sticks, purely because it is not as steady as say a 10lb rifle would be, however, it’s nice to shoulder quickly and shoot off hand when woodland stalking too. It’s swings and roundabouts!

One thing to note, light weight rifles are still accurate, they’re just harder to shoot accurately. Practice practice practice, like anything else. :)

We’re now offering these stocks for Tikka, Remington, and Weatherby rifles as an aftermarket option - they’ve been designed to have a linear recoil path to reduce muzzle flip, and most people are surprised at how pleasant they are to shoot… however whilst a light rifle is no less accurate, it is naturally harder to shoot than a heavy rifle.

As a foot-stalking option the pros outweigh the cons (in our opinion) - you’ll spend 99% of your time carrying it, and they’re every bit as accurate as a heavy rifle once you learn to shoot a super lightweight rifle… good luck, and if you’re interested in trying a lightweight rifle we offer guided stalking experiences in several locations throughout the U.K. with guides who are using Weatherby’s with Peak44 stocks
