Backup knife

Hi all,

Was looking for a small backup knife that I could use in the event of losing my main gralloching knife etc

Was thinking of a folder that included a gut hook. needs to be small as to fit in a hip pack with other items.

Have seen some from Puma and Maserin. Any other ideas or experience with using these types of knives as a backup?

Cheers

Funnny you mention that as I was just doing some knife sharpening and came across a Maserin Jager 3 blade I have that I had forgotten about.

It is one of a number of backups I have as opposed to my main 3 knives but I have never used it in anger.

If you want to buy a real good condition second hand one, let me know and I will grab some pics for you.

Rather than the choice of knife, think more about where you're going to keep it. No good having a knife to replace a lost one if you lose that too.
I have a backup knife in a cordura pouch attached to the strap of my rucksack. Never had to use it, but it's always there.

No I suppose not. Just that there seem to be solutions out there that have one and therefore cover all eventualities. Is there anything particular you have in mind?
When I went through this process, I settled on a Benchmade Mini Bugout (based on advice on here).

It’s absolutely perfect as a multi purpose folder that can live in a chest harness, a pocket, on a belt, wherever. Very strongly recommended.

I’m not a fan of gut hooks - I really don’t see the point of them.

Might be worth a look at the Victorinox Hunter XT knife. One handed opening of either the straight or gutting blade, both of which lock in place.

Cheers all, really appreciate the advice. As mentioned in my post, the backup knife will be in my waist pack that I wear backwards. As in, the lumber of my back. I’m find that very comfortable for lowland stalking

For real backup (for your backup), one of these little neck knives are brilliant. Managed to field gralloch 2 sika with one last week when I left my main knife in the car in a rush to highseat 🙊IMG_9371.webpk

I think you do enough damage with 1 knife so the backup should be locked away somewhere safe.

Personally i hate folders for deer work ( though i practically always have a none locking legal carry folder with me ). when it comes to cleaning the insides or the poor quality / long Gevity of the majority. I do carry the swiss Army knife myself but then i have never used one on a deer .
Last year I started making " the caping knife" I small fixed knife designed for 1. Spare when out 2. The use on small game 3. caping ( yeah its rare to cope stuff in the field ) but some do . It comes in sub £100 with kydex sheath and is very easy to clean . The whole of the blade and handle is only six inch including the blade and handle and can fit in a regular jeans size pocket . It was launched at the Stalking show in a small batch and we sold out fast. 20240427_123229.webp
