The BBC has broken its silence over charging Netflix users for the licence fee. Netflix users and streaming viewers could be forced to pay BBC licence fee under new plans from the Labour Party government, it has been reported this week.
Labour Party government MPs and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy are reportedly looking at ways of funding the BBC after its current Royal Charter expires in 2027. One option for the future funding of the corporation is to make households who only use streaming services pay the annual charge, it was reported on Tuesday.

Where did you read it?
I think Netflix users already are compelled to pay the licence fees. It covers streaming services. I think this is right because I read the fine print quite carefully when I moved last year, not being a tremendous fan of the current quality of the BBC.

It is a scummy move, strong arming people to support an optional service.

Obviously it's just one choice they're considering, but, yes, it screams of desperation and shows how out of touch they are.

The BBC already has enough money and already receives money from Netflix when they purchase the rights to stream productions like Downton Abbey.

Thanks. I'm annoyed with myself now for buying one.

It turns out you currently need a licence if you watch anything "live" ....e.g. watching news via youtube, media etc or if you use iplayer.

Yeah, so I still use stuff like on demand stuff like ITV Player, Channel 5, Channel 4, U....just not live and no iPlayer.

If they do push it on people, many under a certain age will just increase their piracy viewing.

That's a scam/catch all clause though, you can access it all (news, iplayers etc) on you mobile/tablet but you don't need a license for that. Its a fee to have a operational TV in your house. Maybe they should start making 50 inch "tablets" to circumvent it.

Is it a law in the UK to have one? I wonder if people were to refuse to pay it could police do anything about your guns? considering, if you're caught speeding multiple times, they can - for general disregard for the law. (or so I've been told)

I think that is incorrect and that you do need a licence for viewing on any device.

Theoretically, yes. I don't know if there's any precedent though, I'd expect them not to be bothered.

Indeed, but the police know just as well as we do that overwhelmingly speeding convictions are just a scam to extort money from normal people - with ludicrous speed limits, hysterical, spurious safety campaigning and the like.

Absolutely incorrect. You are not required to have licence if you merely own a TV.

Despite its name, a TV Licence is required for the *act* of watching or recording live TV as it is broadcast, regardless of device. You are also required to have one if you use Iplayer, but not any other streaming service.

Back on topic, this is desperate stuff which will never fly. People will just use VPNs and sign up for Netflix apparently 'overseas' to avoid paying this fee.
 
The whole point of this is around the BBC trying their best to garner their “tax” from everyone as more and more choose not to watch what they offer. The days of the BBC having unbiased news service has gone, never to return.
We are exploring the options available. Netflix have closed down a few of their loopholes. With a mate of mine, being asked to provide bank details from Brazil to line up with his Netflix account. No doubt other providers will follow suit.

The Government should enforce a change on the BBC to go commercial. They do push loads of BBC advertisements upon their viewers, reducing there need to pay for outside adverts. All commercial channels do this. The BBC should not be allowed to leach funds from the UK population. The poorest as always are hardest hit.

I get the fact that some people think that they don't get very good value for money from the licence fee, but why are so many saying that it's a tax?

(Genuine question. I have never had a TV, so never paid a licence fee, so I don't really know the background to this. Other than that it is your choice whether you use the service, and therefore it's your choice whether or not to pay).

It was, as I understand, that rare thing a hypothecated tax. Where all the revenue collected from radio licences was to pay for the BBC.

I am old enough, yes, to indeed remember radio licences and when cars came new with a cut out for a radio that was then blanked over with a removable metal plate or removable wooden trim that matched the rest of the dashboard. And, further, you went to a car radio shop who would supply, fit and install its aerial.

You needed a radio licence for the radio you had at home AND the one in you car. Later the television licence came to be to also fund the BBC. So even if you only ever listed to Radio Luxembourg or "the Voice of America" you still until it was abolished needed a radio licence.
 
Hello, The BBC i call The British Bias Corporation, The money they waste on so called Celebrity Salaries and News Readers is mind boggling !!!, £250,000 on doing the Weather forecast !!!

It is a hypothecated tax, and officially counted as a tax by the Office for National Statistics. You have to pay it to watch any broadcast content, whether you consume BBC output or not.
