Making Gambrels

I wanted to make some gambrels and wondered what thickness of stainless to order,

I wanted to make a lightweight field one for roe and smaller, and a heavier one for fallow, any suggestions welcome!

10-12mm for fallow, 8mm for roe I would guess don’t really shoot enough to know, I just use the same for all

Plumbers blow torch and 8mm will get you out of trouble, I use oxy/propane and jigs to achieve what size bend which are needed. Get a piece of fencing wire and make the shape you like then bend your W to that.
Grind the ends first as they are much easier when it is not in a W shape.

What wire size do you suggest for roe, I was wanting to make a smaller lightweight one that I might keep in the van.

Bend the shape you want from a piece of wire, then you can follow that shape as a reference when bending your 8mm
2/3mm fencing wire or some wire from a wire coat hanger.
Stainless will change color if you heat it, I bend all the X parts of my hangers cold with a long piece of pipe in the vice.
Everything else is cherry red and pulled around a jig.
8mm for every thing.

Does the colour polish out or does it stay like that? Not that it matters just out of interest!

it will polish but the dead deer don't mine

If you are fussed, you could pickle them.

Most kind thank you but noooooooooooooo! The mass made ones are machine bent made in huge batches.
the 8mm will bend cold but I like a sharper V for my own personal ones which take a 50kg fallow as I will hang them to cool before they go in the big chiller.

Why not just buy some from Tim much less hassle!

1 - that’s not as fun
2 - I can make them to my specification
3 - 1 meter of rod is £4 I can make three gambrels

This was a lightweight prototype I made from bits I had lying about. Very light and easy to roll up and stick in a bag. No welding or technical skills necessary either

Anyone able to share some pics especially of a cold forming jig or set up

I've been thinking about making my own or scavenging and repurposing something suitable as commercial ones seem a lot for what you get and at the end of the day a stick works sort of

In my belt I have 2 s hooks and a meter of paracord with a loop at each end - hook one hock and loop over a branch and pull up into place. Wrap the cord round the branch to make a spread and hook the other end. Works for what I can manhandle

i also have an L shaped furniture corner brace and s hooks which I plan on trying out

Keen to make my own slightly less janky version so advice appreciated

A cold forming jig works best with a roller at the point of contact around a form to make the size.
You will need a secure bench and long handle to pull them around cold!. I pull them "hot" around interchangeable forms.

Did you make your "S" hooks if so hot or cold?
