Time to put in a variation, talk to me about the 6.5 & 7 PRC 🤔

So, a new rifle/calibre needed and of course there's the want 🤔

The need:

A cartridge which "bucks the wind" (the ground we look after in SW Scotland is perpetually windy!) and shoots "flatter" than my much used and enjoyed .308. High BC, with good down range energy.

Application:

Hill and open lowland ground deer management, Red, roe and fallow.

Happy with the .243 & .308 for much of it, but some limitations becoming evident.

Not interested in a .270 my stalking compadre uses one and it's a bit meh 😅

30.06 is only a marginal step up from the .308 in the bullet range I'd be using, especially when home loading.

I've been considering the 6.5 and 7 PRC, I think the 7 PRC would be a hammer on the big lowland Reds, but maybe a bit much on the smaller animals... real world experience from folks using them would be grand.

Cheers,

Al

I use a 6.5PRC, and have shot roe, red, sika and fallow with it, from 40m to 420m. Everything i’ve hit with it has died very fast - very few runners, and then largely because of poor shot placement. It is very destructive at short range.

I have not used a 7PRC, but I don’t see a compelling reason to get one in the UK. I have yet to shoot anything with the 6.5 and feel undergunned.

That's exactly the sort of answer I was after!

It would definitely be a rifle I'd be using for the bigger framed deer.

From what I read The 7 prc pulls away from the 7mm rem mag around 500m + in terms of drop etc. I shoot a 7mm rem mag and I don’t see it as suitable for roe. I now Only use it on reds where I can. If I were you I would keep a smaller calibre for roe and pick either of the 2 calibres for the larger deer.

The 7 prc hasn’t really taken off in the UK,im not saying it isn’t a good cartridge but it falls in a no man’s land for me anyway.

The 6.5 prc will deal with any uk game handily and there is factory ammo (£££££) if you desire

Thanks for the input chaps.

It would definitely be a rifle shouldered when going after the bigger deer. As I say, if I was going after roe specifically I'd take the .243 or .308 depending on which bit of ground I was planning on visiting.

I used 6.5-284 for a couple of decades. It's very near a 6.5prc. I shoot roe, red and sika. I use 140 eld-m. They buck the wind well and kill well. It's easy to shoot

This

Three barrels worth of deer from near to “far”

Very effective cartridge

Though I’ve now changed to 284 Win because I felt like a change
I guess there's a wide range of choices in bullet weights and construction in either 6.5 or 7mm
