Offline maps and navigation, share your location with others - Organic Maps - the best solution?

Offline mapping is a vital tool, particularly if the land you manage has sketchy cell coverage.

By far and away the best offline navigation app I have found is Organic Maps. It is free.

In a nutshell:

  • Install app and download maps of choice [list is global]
  • Open app and once your phone has found satellites, press 1742902103928.webp at right of screen
  • Pointer in center of screen should now mark where you stand on the planet
  • Touch pointer or other location you wish to share and edit/share that position as required [location data format can be in several diffent formats. One useful option is the OM url as it opens a browser on the recipient's device: I.e. they do not need Organic Maps app to see where you are: example below is OpenStreetMap ]

Any different to downloading a set area of your choice on the google maps app?

I do not use any of the Google suite, so no first hand experience. There are some Reddit posts suggesting Google offline map flakiness if cell signal comes and goes. I see total stability with OM.

If you do use Google, are you able to share data with anyone who does not use Google?

The USP of the Organic Maps offering for me is the universiality of sharing location data quite independent of any corporate ecosystem. And the ability to share that in simple user-selectable formats:1742979866500.webp
