Sold: Marlin SBL in 45/70

I have a 4570 SBL I might sell not sure which manufacturer but it's mint condition and shoots very accurately. Can get you some pictures if interested.

Morning John, thanks for your reply and I look forward to photos in due course, and thanks Tim for your guidance on identification of the Ruger made model.

The serial numbers are transposed to
I’ve a late Remlin which is identical to the Ruger as they were made on the same machines,

Do t believe the web bull regarding these things, only very early Remlins were rubbish

If it helps anyone my local RFD has a marlin in 45/70 with an octagonal barrel.
Pm me for more details as to location.

the ruger ones are just better finished with a few small improvements aswell

Appreciate that there may be good, late manufactured, Remington rifles out there but the reputation for the whole series is not great and how warranties are dealt with could be an issue. So, as per my first post, Ruger made please.
Did you check yours Johnessex?

Sorry haven't had a chance to look in gun room yet. Will try this weekend.

Hi Sweep,

I am not selling mine. Its a great gun, worth even what I paid for it (I bought via GB when it had a 12 month back order at my local dealers...........so yeah it was pricy).

I would highly recommend suppressing it. The Recoil is stout with Expanding 325 grain FTX, but recoil is brutal with 405 grain Flat Nose Hard Cast (BHN 25+), but beats bleeding out with your femoral sliced by a boar or getting scalped while on the way to a very painful death by a bear.

The thread pitch might need an adapter to connect to certain cans, will certainly be needed for an Silencerco products.

Its a great woods gun, the 45-70 will punch through light brush/soft wood fir type branches with little deflection (within ~15-20 yards impact from target). It can be instant knockdown with a frontal shot, but would not recommend it if you are in a tree.

You can also load forager #8 shot rounds for grouse, and carry a few if you hear grouse walking if you are on stand, but range is limited to 20 yards max (better to keep to 15) as the dispersion caused by the rifling beyond that is a recipe for non recoverable cripples. (Ironically a 2.5" snubby with 38 spcl. snake-shot is effective out to 25 yards (less time in the barrel for centrifugal effect to act on the shot and cause the dispersion.)

The unload via the gate versus having to cycle rounds through the chamber (especially with cold fingers) is much safer for unloading,

I have both a Remlin and a Ruger made gun, and the Ruger made guns fit and finish is way better.

Good luck with getting one.

Seamus

Hi Seamus, and thanks for confirming what I suspected about Rem vs Rug. Only buying one so it will be a Ruger if one comes up.

I have a marlin made one in 444 marlin wouldn't part with it for the world. Shoots really well and as previously suggested, makes an excellent woodland rifle. Good luck with you search.

I hope someone turns up trumps with 1 Sweep, I bought a pre owned one last week from an rfd down south, ideally wanted a new one but there’s no sign of them coming into the UK anytime soon, the Trapper is very nice too, there’s a as new 1 on GT.

Regards Paul

Great collection Paul. You could bet them all and still be sure to win guessing which one I would choose. All very nice but the SBL is a step above.

Morning mate,

Yes it’s my favourite too, I wanted a 1894 sbl but same story, no one is getting stock at the moment, do you have a slot for 1 at the moment. I know a guy who has 1 but he’s a tad on the tight side so never bothered asking him if he wanted to sell it 🤣

Just sold Henry in 44 magnum so waiting for 1-1 variation to come back.
Sounds like a plan, i quite like my Henry, there all very similar tbh, the S&W is quite a chunky rifle n equally nice to shoot, 1895 probably looks the best. Have u thought about the 1895 trapper or u wanting the sbl?
