Hello, I’m requesting to join as I’ve been directed here by a friend/mentor. Essentially I’m new to this and looking for information, help and guidance. I don’t posses a deer calibre at the present but have shotgun/firearm certificates, so which calibre to go for is my one of my first questions, .270, 6.5 or .243? I used to rough/clay shoot, then work got in the way, now part time I have time to devote to other stuff. Currently occasionally clay shoot, some game and pigeon etc. Derbyshire based, with friends that supply me with venison and have offered to get me involved. Thanks

Welcome to the site. Get a decent rifle - 6.5 Creedmoor all day long  shows you dont care what anyone else thinks. If you cant cope with constant abuse (and jealousy) get something boring like a .270, .30-06, .308 ....sorry got bored after that list.

For your first deer legal calibre I would recommend 6.5x55 also known as the Swedish Mauser. It will take any deer in the UK, it is not too heavy on recoil and ammo and reloading components are easily available. It’s likely to be granted more easily as a first deer calibre rifle than a .308 or 30-06 but that largely depends on your FEO and issuing police force. A lot of people will recommend the 6.5 CM but out to sensible and ethical stalking distances there is not much to choose between the two ballistically. The 6.5 CM comes into its own at longer distances and is an excellent long range target round.

If you do however fancy a 30 cal I would recommend a .308.

Thank you for the advice, 6.5 does seem like an easier option to get authorisation for and suitable for my purposes.
