Design fault!!?

I am about to start using my late husband’s Sauer 404 Synchro XT as my back up rifle but I’ve come across a design flaw!! I need the comb quite high but, if I raise it, I can’t get the bolt in as in pic 1 (I take it out for transportation and storage). If I have the comb low then put the bolt in (pic 2 shows the bolt in and right back) I then have to unthread my sling from the rear swivel (which is the adjuster tool) to raise the comb again as I can’t reach the rear adjuster hole in the stock with the sling still attached. (Being only 5’4”, I need the sling quite short). I then have to rethread the sling back through when the tool is back in place. I certainly don’t want to be faffing about with that when I arrive at my stalking ground and again when I finish!

In short, yes, it looks like poor design! Lots of other rifles have the same issue where you have to lower or remove the comb to fully remove the bolt, but I don’t know any with such a fiddly way of removing it. I guess the upside is that the comb can be very accurately adjusted, but the access should be in a different place to the sling swivel if that’s the case.

That's deeply annoying

Ive not seen the sling swivel as the adjustment but maybe it is easier to make ambidextrous stock that way rather than side adjustment

Is the snag small enough to trim the riser so it passes without moving

Maybe see if someone can fit an additional rear sling swivel to it for you? Might need some epoxy inside the stock to get the swivel to hold, but probably possible to achieve

Perhaps forget about the integral cheek riser, and add a strap-on padded one instead? That way, you can position it a little further back.
The one I have has dense foam pads inside it, and you put as many in as you need to get the right height and shape, and you can cut them to create a hollow for your cheek. It would be easy enough to cut a notch in the front of the foam pads to create a low point there to help with bolt clearance.

Yes very common my 202 is the same. It’s also and issue with my PSE stocked tikka but at least the cheek riser can be dropped in a tooless way and a sharpie line allows it to be replaced in the same place

I have two 404 XT’s and love them, it’s a problem on all cheek raisers if you want them high, the adjuster tool in the front of the sling attachment is just an Allen key, carry the same size Allen key in your pocket saves messing around with releasing the sling

I’ve knocked out target rifle adjustable combs to allow the bolt to be removed. A higher tech solution from Robert Nibbs is the comb is hinged at the rear and held at the front with a strong magnet, stays in place whilst shooting lifts up to remove the bolt.

Yes I’ve looked out a 5mm Allen key as I sussed out that would do the job!!

I have got a padded cheek piece on my usual (Tikka) rifle and have done for years. Works fine but, hey, late hubby spent a lot of money on buying this rifle so need to make full use of its features 😁😁

Good plan it saves you having to keep releasing the front sling attachment and standard Allen key is easier to use, enjoy your stalking

I use Tourbon cheek risers, certainly worth a look. I've found them excellent

Simple fix, make a channel with either a dremel or power file, in the cheek piece so the bolt can be removed, I did it on a a few of my stocks

I'm sure he'd rather you adapted it and used it well, than forever struggle because one of its features suited him but not you.
He was a big chap, and you're a small lass, so some alterations are bound to be required.

Was good to see you at the Stalking Show. Hopefully catch up again next year.
All the best 👍
