no corrosion mot flags yet on my 2012 hilux invincible. but the rear tub mounts are slowly getting worse. I have been waxoyling it most years. worst places seem to be around the rear wheel arches.
When I bought my hilux at a BCA auction 2015 with over 40 hiluxes the ones from the outer Hebrides were ones to avoid. They definately dont do well with salt. These days salt seems to be spread at the slightest hint of a cold spell.
its the same old story with all toyotas that if you want the chassis to last you need to look after it.

Sorry to resurrect this but has anyone been in touch with Toyota recently about chassis rot, apparently they are checking out all hilux under 12 years old.

Where did you get that info ?
Is it a recall ?

As an aside there’s a recla to fit trackers if you all want one fitted as well

It is not a recall as such, you can wait for a letter or just contact your local Toyota dealer

Urghh. It seems my vehicle's chassis fail case may have been the leading edge of a spate discovered in the U.K.. I wish I had pushed for the chassis replacement harder instead of the buy-back I settled for.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

The Isuzu I replaced the Hilux with is competent but laced with nanny state electronics you cannot turn off. I would have my 2106 Hilux back in a heartbeat...

I bought a Hilux new in 2016 from my local U.K. dealer because of its acclaim on multiple continents by a range of users and media reviewers.

Since new, I have completed 44k miles [average of 6.4k p.a.] almost exclusively on tarmac in the U.K.

Out of the blue, the vehicle was declared to have failed its 4th MOT due to rust perforation of chassis within 40cm of a suspension point. The dealership and Toyota Customer relations are not interested in considering this to be a premature failure. CR make the point that the Toyota warranty is only for painted body sections. [see below]

I am disappointed in equal measure that (1) the failure could occur in so short time frame due to such benign usage (2) that the dealership that serviced the vehicle from new and who performed every MOT failed to flag the onset of rust at a point at which prevention could happen and (3) Toyota CR have no desire to make good.

If you buy a second hand Hilux, check the chassis. In particular, the OSR section.

Well I have good news for you.
Toyota is now offering complete chassis replacements on vehicles from 2012 in an attempt to repair the damage in consumer confidence in the Toyota brand.

Go to your local dealer and book an inspection

Too late.

In 2023, the deal that Toyota made with me was to buy back the rotten truck: My recompense was that they bought back my rotten-chassis Hilux for an above market price.

Today I bid farewell to my Hilux of 7 years. I really had hoped it would have been my "forever" vehicle. Sadly not to be as it had an assembly-time achilles heal: defective chassis protection.

Local dealership took keys and V5, and vehicle chassis is now destined for analysis by Toyota Europe [so I am advised]. 1.26x market-value recompense en route my account next week.

I have closed the deal on a replacement 4x4: I will take delivery of an Isuzu V-Cross before month end. I have teed up both LineX bed-liner installation and Dinitrol under-body treatment. This 4x4 will see me out.

Full chassis change out required.
I’m waiting for confirmation of the collection date.
However……the dealer has provided a vehicle inspection report “MOT” with a list of advisories and mandatory requirements which need to be rectified before they can accept it for the chassis swap.
The main dealer quote for this work is approximately £4500 - i’lll carry out the repairs myself and save £4000.
If I get any further info I’ll be sure to update this thread.

Thanks for the heads up, I have a 2014 Hilux Icon. Do you happen to know if this chassis replacement is automatic or subject to the inspection outcome. Mine is looking a little grubby, if I can get it sorted out I will. The vehicle is in otherwise excellent condition with 86k on the clock.

I was lucky as I was shown the report and the only negative thing was the aircon isn't great.
I was told that they Will be in touch with me within the next week to arrange a replacement vehicle and they Will have my truck for 35 days.

Will be interesting to see what they give as a courtesy car, that aside the experience has been nothing but positive so far

I was asked if I needed another hilux and I said not really as I'm working overseas and he said we will get you a corrolla or similar.
To be honest I'm very happy with this
