ASE UTRA sl5i bore sizing

On their website ASE recommends the 0.25 size for 6.5mm - it seems odd as 6.5mm is actually larger than 0.25"? Has anyone got first-hand experience of using the .25 size with 6.5mm bullets

Thanks
Keith

Yes, it's fine. Also, Ed has just measured a 223 SL5i bore for me, at .265, so I'd expect a similar degree of clearance in the ones marked .25, but are designated suitable up to 6.5mm by ASE. Obviously, if you've a shonky thread job, or are shooting long bullets , you potentially could get caught if there's a bit of yaw as they exit the crown.
Wouldn't it be easier if ASE just designated them 6.5mm...

Many thanks. I kept going back to their website to double-check. I am shooting either Hornady or Nosler 120gr copper - so nothing extra-long.

Pretty sure my ASE jet z is a .25 but works for my 6.5x55.
Think it was recommended on their website.

Hi
When I emailed ASE in regard to moderator choice for a 6.5PRC I got these responses from the production manager

‘I would go with the SL5i 6,5 version. You can also get a version meant for .30 cal but you will not get as good suppression with them because of a bigger bulletchannel.’

‘In the 6,5 version of the SL series there's a 7,3mm bulletchannel, for the .30 version it's 8,4mm.’

Hope that helps

Cheers

I contacted Jackson rifles when I wanted an sl5i for my 6.5cm. They recommended a 30cal version. As the longer / heavier bullets may have clipped the 2506 version. I’ve been more than happy with it. I also have an sl5i .223 mod in my foxing setup(223)

I’d use .30 cal - I think the sound difference is negligible but problems start when the mod bore is too tight. I’ve used a .30 cal can (SL5i) on a .223 and there’s really no difference.

There is an offer on a .25" and, I love an offer :-)

Who doesn’t love an offer! Word of caution though, I used a ASE CQB .223 mod on a .243 - ASE confirmed it was safe etc. however just couldn’t get it to shoot well with my known accurate load of 87gr V-Max. Suspect bore was tight enough on the mod to introduce some turbulence and throw groups out. However what shoots badly in my rifle might perform brilliantly in yours so to speak!

A few years ago my mate had his rifle rebarreled to 260 remington.
He used his .25 cal ase sl5 mod but the rifle never shot as well as he'd hoped.
He tried various bullet and powder combinations but the best accuracy he could get was .75 moa.
He then tried a .30cal mod and groups improved a lot.
Best groups went down to .25moa.

The single most significant variable in sound attenuation is radial clearance between bore and bullet
Whilst the Mk1 ear hole may not pick up the difference I can catagorically state its a huge difference

I run all my mods "out of spec" because the threads have been done by us and/or checked for concentricity to the bore
tight spec thread, proper undercut, perpendicular shoulder etc etc

One of my current mods is a DPT .22 baffled OB on my 6.5Grendel
Bore 0.272"/6.89mm - Radial clearance - 0.004"/0.195mm (Several hundred rounds, no swipes or strike, extremely quiet)

Malxwal's mod above presents the following
0.265" Bore - 0.257" bullet - 0.004" radial clearance

I'd was me id be going 30 cal .
As already stated above 2 folks seen groups not great then change to a ball hair bigger and groups came back ....
I'd go slightly bigger and wear ear plugs

Peter gave me the same information some time back.

I would lean towards the .30 as you have very little wiggle room if the threads aren’t spot on and checked by a gunsmith as Ed is doing.

Also if the suppressor works slightly loose, a baffle strike will be more likely with the smaller internal diameter.

Although a different make, I run two identical Stalon moderators on my rifles, one being a 6.5mm and the other a .30 cal. There is a significant difference in noise when you swap between the two on my 6.5 creed. I always used to use oversized mods on my rifles, but I definitely wouldn’t since hearing the difference

If there's any issues/doubt, I just swap to my 30 cal for comparison. In fact, load development about to be done using the 30 cal.
